Conservation measures

In 2015, the nature conservation foundation Grafschaft Bentheim leased the landscape protection area Wacholderhain Kloster Bardel on a long-term basis from the owner of the school foundation of the Diocese of Osnabrück . In October 2015, the implementation of measures to maintain and increase biological diversity in the juniper grove began. In particular, work began to remove the late blooming bird cherry , also called late bird cherry or American bird cherry , in the LSG. The late blooming bird cherry, a problematic neophyte species from North America , overgrown juniper bushes in the landscape protection area and caused them to die off. It was cleared over an area of almost 5 hectares, including the roots, and the nutrient-rich topsoil was removed with the excavator. The junipers got light again and heather could develop again on the sandy soil of the inland dunes . The heathland has been grazed with Bentheimer Landschafen , a local breed from the Grafschaft Bentheim, and goats from the Nordhorn Zoo since 2016 . Grazing prevents the bird cherry from spreading again.

The nature conservation foundation Grafschaft Bentheim has also optimized the adjacent areas, which were also leased. There were hedgerows , flower strips and a Schulwald created. During school enrollment, for the Abitur and on other festive occasions, the students can plant their own memory trees in the school forest.

In 2015 the 2nd Bardeler Juniper Care Day was held. A total of 170 pupils, teachers and parents took part.

In addition to the nature conservation foundation Grafschaft Bentheim , the work is financially supported by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the fine distillery Sasse.
