The Achterberg small water bodies are a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Bad Bentheim in the Grafschaft Bentheim district .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 284 is around 5.8  hectares . 2.77 hectares are designated as the FFH area of the same name . The area has been under nature protection since July 21, 2016. The natural monument "Gerlachsche area" (identification: ND NOH 18) , which was designated in 1988, was incorporated into it . The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the county of Bentheim.

The nature reserve is located southwest of the Bad Bentheim district of Gildehaus in the Münsterland lowland bay . It places a complex of nutrient-poor small bodies of water with adjacent areas under protection. Species-rich beach litter and dwarf rush vegetation settles in the small bodies of water . On the adjoining areas there is pioneer vegetation , wet heaths and peat swamps with rush communities as well as swampy areas and wet grassland .

The bodies of water were created in 1986 as a compensation measure and the area was acquired by the Grafschaft Bentheim district in 1988 as part of a land consolidation process . To the east, wooded areas are included in the nature reserve. Pine and birch pioneer forest as well as wet bushes grow here. The wooded area serves primarily as a buffer for the water complex.

In the nature reserve settle u. a. Flooding celery , small water hose , pure white water crowfoot, hedgehog hose , millet sedge , needle marsh rush , multi-stemmed marsh rush , strandling, water lobelia , marsh john's wort and pill fern . The nature reserve is home to one of the few known occurrences of the frog herb in the Lower Saxony part of the natural area. The wet heaths are primarily formed by bell heather . Here resettlement of thread gentian , gentian , bog lily , Brown beak-sedge and heather and peat moss . The peat bogs accommodate u. a. Medium and round-leaved sundew and marsh bear moss .

In order to preserve the habitat for many endangered plant and animal species, bush encroachment is counteracted by de-kussel removal measures . In 2014 the water was desludged in order to counteract its silting up and to improve the living conditions for strandling and frogweed.

The nature reserve is bordered to the north to a farm road and is otherwise of farmland surrounding it.
