The nature reserve is located northwest of Laar on the border with the Netherlands and essentially consists of Lake Laar, which was created in 1984 when sand was extracted for the construction of a NATO depot in Coevorden , the Netherlands . The area was left to its natural development and is now a refuge for water birds . Over 200 wintering pygmy swans were counted there. The area is also of great importance for whooper swans and tufted ducks .
The nature reserve is looked after by NABU Grafschaft Bentheim. There is an observation hut on the shore of the lake.
