The Gildehauser Venn is a moor and heather area (Low German: Fenn ) in the border area of the Grafschaft Bentheim ( Lower Saxony ), North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands . It is located in the urban area of Bad Bentheim between Gildehaus and Gronau . The Gildehauser Venn is considered to be one of the most valuable wetlands in north-west Germany in terms of natural history. The Gildehauser Venn is 740 hectares (ha) in size. Partial areas of the Venn were designated as a nature reserve (NSG) as early as May 1938 . In 1985 the NSG was designated in its current size of 650 hectares. The core zone of the NSG, in which there is a complete ban on use, is 350 hectares in size. This nature reserve is largely part of the FFH area Gildehauser Venn with 611.4 hectares. In 1995 a maintenance and development plan for Gildehauser Venn was drawn up. The county of Grafschaft Bentheim is responsible as the lower nature conservation authority .
In the district of Borken , in the urban area of Gronau, the Rüenberger Venn nature reserve with an area of 64 hectares is directly connected and the Tütenvenn nature reserve with an area of 179.42 hectares in the Ochtrup area.
Area description
The Gildehauser Venn is a diverse moor and heather area. The area is criss-crossed by flat, elongated dune ridges . The damp moor heaths are dominated by bell heather and are partially interspersed with reeds and moor lily populations . On the dry dune ridges there are mainly sandy heaths.
Bird species in the Fens
The Gildehauser Venn is an important habitat for meadow birds. Species such as the red-backed killer , lapwing , curlew and common snipe breed in the NSG . As the conditions in the Fens got worse and worse over the years, species such as stonechat , meadow pipit , little owl , quail , godwit , redshank and oystercatcher no longer breed in the area.
Protection provisions
To protect the NSG Gildehauser Venn, various special protection regulations were issued. The core zones of the NSG may not be entered or driven on outside of the paths marked in the location. In the entire nature reserve, it is also prohibited to convert grassland permanently into arable land and to create drainage. In the core zones and buffer zone II, grassland before June 1st is also prohibited. mow each year. In the core zones it is also forbidden to bring liquid manure all year round, to use chemical plant treatment agents and to use manure in the period from 15.10. until November 30th to hunt small game, with the exception of roe deer and predatory game. In buffer zone II it is also forbidden to enter grassland in the period from 20.03. until June 1st Bring in manure.
Major fires in 1996 and 2014
After a major fire, large parts of the Venn were destroyed from April 22 to April 26, 1996. However, nature has recovered very quickly. Another major fire occurred 18 years later in March 2014, which on the surface extended to up to 150 hectares, but was extinguished within 16 hours.
