Without is one of the oldest settlements in western Lower Saxony and is one of the small communities in Lower Saxony. Without belongs to the joint community Schüttorf in the Grafschaft Bentheim district .

Without borders in the south on the district of Steinfurt ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) and in the east on the district of Emsland . The neighboring municipality of Samern encloses the place in the north and in the west.
The municipality belongs to the Schüttorf joint municipality , which has its administrative seat in the city of Schüttorf .

history
The area was settled as early as the Paleolithic. The place name was first mentioned in 1213 in the monosyllable form "ON". The village "Oen" (without) was founded by Franconian immigrants in the Carolingian era . It is a clustered village that also served as a military village . The municipality of Ohne in the extreme south-east or south of the joint municipality of Schüttorf has a distinctive, very compact village location and is located directly on a ford of the Vechte . With an independent village center above the Vechtal, the settlement development of Ohne, unlike in the other rural communities, is not characterized by scattered areas, but by an accumulation of settlements and buildings. Even the isolated farmsteads are still relatively close to the village location with a church, play area and other typical village facilities. Settlement development has expanded on the edge of the original core location of the village. The Vechte valley with its extensive floodplain and, in the more recent past, the courtyard location in the immediate village area was decisive for the present day. Outside of the village, the municipality is characterized by extensive agricultural areas (even without courtyards) and in the far west by the forest areas that lead to Bad Bentheim .
The place has retained its village character. L 68 and K 25 keep through traffic away from the actual village street. The village square in the center, on which the war memorial formerly stood, is characterized by old trees: four linden trees cut as head trees , another linden tree with a normal, trimmed crown and two tall hawthorns . The square continues to fulfill traffic functions. The lanes are paved with natural stones, the parking areas with red pavers. Red bricks or red clinker facing were used for the facades of the adjacent buildings .
The church of the village is atypically not directly on the square, but in the second row.
From the square, a path with tall hawthorn leads to the rear of the church on a wooden bridge over the Vechte . The path continues east of the river, lined with hedges on both sides, and ends as a cycle path on the county road. Two tourist cycle path projects, the “Grafschafter Fietsentour” and the “Vechtetalroute”, lead through the town.
Not far from the village is the Quendorf wind farm (9.2 megawatts), which was completed in May 2013.

Buildings
- The Evangelical Reformed Church is one of the oldest churches in the county of Bentheim, parts of it date from the first half of the 13th century. A fire on Ascension Day in 1757 caused considerable damage to the tower and roof structure, which was not repaired until 1764. This is evidenced by an oversized inscription on the tower front: "RENOVEERT 1764". Without received a permanent church in the 12th century, which was consecrated by the Utrecht missionary Ludger. In the following years the term "God-Without" came up. It should refer to a crucifix in the church, which was already a symbol of the parish in the 9th century. The oldest part of the church from the 13th century is built in the Romanesque style. Extensions in the 15th century were built in the Gothic style. In the church there is a 1.10 meter high baptismal font of the "Bentheimer type", which is one of the oldest in the county.

kindergarten
The kindergarten “Ohner Waldmäuse” was founded in 1972 as a children's play area and in 2011 it was converted into a kindergarten. In 2015 the kindergarten was closed and the common kindergarten “Die Pfefferkörner” opened for the children from Ohne, Samern and Suddendorf in Samern on the sports grounds.
Local fire brigade without
The Ohne local fire brigade was founded on July 29, 1934. The local fire brigade without is a base fire brigade of the Schüttorf volunteer fire brigade. A tank fire engine , a fire fighting group vehicle , a logistics equipment vehicle and a team transport vehicle are available.
