Samern is a municipality in Lower Saxony in the Grafschaft Bentheim district .

Geographical location
Samern lies between Nordhorn and Steinfurt on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia . The municipality belongs to the Schüttorf joint municipality , which has its administrative seat in the city of Schüttorf .

Municipal council
The municipality council in Samern consists of nine members. In the local elections on September 11, 2016, only the Samern electoral community ran . The municipal election had a turnout of 67.95%.
mayor
Marco Beernink is honorary mayor after the constituent meeting of the council of the municipality of Samern on November 14, 2016. Gerhard Schepers was previously mayor of the community for many years.
Culture and sights
The Samerrott is a forest that has been self-managed by the so-called painting farmers since the Middle Ages in the cooperative community . In the center of the Samerott, the legendary raven tree stood until the late 19th century. A Baptist from Münster is said to have hid there in 1535 - and was saved by the painters from the henchmen of the Catholic bishop. Even today the impressive diameter of the raven tree is marked by a ring made of pieces of oak.
The watchtower Mansbrügge, popularly known as "Piggetörnken", was supposedly a former count's mint from the 14th century. According to recent findings, this building has only ever served as a customs office.

There are several clubs in Samern, such as the SV Suddendorf-Samern 1959 e. V. The first soccer team of SV Suddendorf-Samern plays in the district league. The club has numerous youth teams in the boys and girls sector. There are three men's teams, an old men's team and a women's team. There is also a shooting club with a shooting group in the community. There is also a riding club.

The Autobahn 31 runs through the area of the municipality of Samern.
Since the beginning of May 2007 the citizen bus route 61 of the Verkehrsgemeinschaft Grafschaft Bentheim has been running from Schüttorf via Samern, Ohne , Bilk to Wettringen and via Haddorf, Ohne and Samern back to Schüttorf.
