The Carl Deilmann mining and civil engineering GmbH in 1888 by Carl Deilmann (1866-1936) in Dortmund founded. Initially located on Märkische Strasse in the city center , the company acquired an extensive plot of land in Kurl in 1906 (incorporated into Dortmund in 1928) in order to be able to expand further. The company carried out shaft construction and rock work for the development of mineral resources and was internationally active.

In 1938, when drilling in the Bentheim Forest, abundant natural gas deposits were discovered - the first usable ones in Western Europe. The main administration was then moved to Bentheim in 1946 by Carl Deilmann , who had headed the company since 1936.

On March 31, 1968 C. Deilmann GmbH with its subsidiary Wix & Liesenhoff in Dortmund and Gutehoffnungshütte Aktienverein in Oberhausen with its subsidiary Haniel & Lueg GmbH in Düsseldorf founded the company Deilmann-Haniel GmbH. The shares in C. Deilmann AG were sold to Preussag (today TUI ) in 1991 . Since the name Deilmann had a good reputation, it was retained and Deilmann Erdöl-Erdgas (DEE, today GDF Suez E&P Germany) was founded. The drilling activities of C. Deilmann AG and the Deutsche Schachtbau- und Tiefbohrgesellschaft (DST), also acquired by Preussag, were combined in the Scottish KCA DEUTAG in Bad Bentheim .

In 1999 Deilmann-Haniel GmbH merged with E. Heitkamp GmbH in Herne to form Heitkamp-Deilmann-Haniel GmbH (today the insolvent Heitkamp BauHolding ). The mining activities of both companies were henceforth taken over by Deilmann-Haniel GmbH, the construction activities by E. Heitkamp GmbH.

In 2007, Deilmann-Haniel GmbH filed for bankruptcy as a result of the drastic decline in orders from its main client, Deutsche Steinkohle (DSK). The foreign mining activities of the insolvent company were sold to the newly founded Deilmann-Haniel International Mining and Tunneling GmbH (DHI) with 51% shares to Aton GmbH , Fulda. The remaining 49% initially remained with Heitkamp-Deilmann-Haniel GmbH. Aton GmbH now holds 100% of the company. The company is based in Dortmund. The DHI group includes, among other things, Deilmann-Haniel, which specializes in shaft sinking and other underground work and is active worldwide.

In the mid-1990s, the machine and steel construction department was spun off from Deilmann-Haniel GmbH as an independent GmbH. In 2009 the name was changed to dh mining systems GmbH (dhms). Dhms is a special machine manufacturer that has specialized in the construction and installation of underground hard coal mines. At the end of 2017, dhms will close due to the ongoing decline in orders.

JS Redpath Holdings Inc., North Bay, ON, Canada and Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc., Evansville, IN, USA also belong to Deilmann-Haniel International.
