Bernhard von Bentheim (* 1330 ; † November 2, 1421 in Bentheim ) ruled the county of Bentheim from 1364 to 1421 and was provost in the prince-bishopric of Münster .

Life

Origin and family

Bernhard von Bentheim was born as the son of Count Johann I von Bentheim († 1333) and Mechthild von der Lippe († 1366). The origin of his family lay in the Gerulfinger family , the first counts in (West) Friesland and Holland . Bernhard had six siblings, including Simon (Simon I, Count von Bentheim) and the two cathedral preachers Otto and Christian . After resigning from office, Bernhard was married to Gertrud von Dorte in his first marriage and to Pyronetta von Steinfurt in his second marriage. Both marriages remained childless, so that he is considered the last regent of the Bentheim line from the House of Holland. The line has thus died out in the male line.

Career and work

Bernhard was in the possession of the Vicarie in Schüttorf when, on August 19, 1361, he received the cathedral provost of Münster in exchange from his brother Christian. After four years he gave his office back to his brother to take over the government in the county of Bentheim from his brother Otto. He was instrumental in founding the Frenswegen monastery and granted Neuenhaus town charter in 1369 and Nordhorn in 1379 as well . After his death he was buried in front of the high altar of the Frenswegen monastery church.
