Life

Origin and family

Otto von Bentheim was born the son of Count Johann I von Bentheim († 1333) and Mechthild von der Lippe († 1366). The origin of the family lay in the Gerulfinger family , the first counts in (West) Friesland and Holland . His great-grandfather was Count Otto II von Bentheim . He had six siblings, including Simon (Simon I, Count of Bentheim) and the two cathedral preachers Bernhard and Christian .

Career and work

On September 21, 1313 Otto sealed the chapter statute and on November 17, 1356 took the oath as provost of the cathedral. After the early death of his brother Simon in 1344, Otto took over the affairs of government in the Grafschaft Bentheim and remained in this office until it was handed over to his brother Bernhard. On February 20, 1358 Otto was from Pope Innocent VI. removed from office and resignation prompted because he was also in possession of the Dompropsteien in Münster and Paderborn. At the same time as this decision, the Pope commissioned Bishop Baldewin of Paderborn, Otto's brother Christian, canon in Cologne, to transfer the Dompropstei in Münster. Contrary to the papal order, Otto remained in office. Otto also kept the canons in Münster for a few years.
