Shape of Despair is a Finnish funeral doom metal band.

history

The band was founded in 1995 under the name Raven by Tomi Ullgren and Jarno Salomaa , members of Barathrum and Thy Serpent . Still under the name Raven, the band released their first demo Alone in the Mist in 1998 . In September 1998 the name was changed to Shape of Despair . In 2000 the band signed a contract with the Spikefarm Records label and released their debut Shades of… in the same year . In 2001 the band separated from singer and drummer Toni Mäensivu, Pasi Koskinen took over the vocals as a guest and Samu Ruotsalainen became the new drummer. In September, the second album Angels of Distress was released , on which both participated. The album was distributed in the US through Relapse Records .

The third album Illusion's Play , on which Pasi Koskinen acted as a full band member, was released in 2004. With this release, Shape of Despair began a cooperation with Season of Mist for the US market. Shortly thereafter, the compilation Shape of Despair appeared . It was also the last release of the band on the Spikefarm Records label for the European market. In the following years the band became quieter, only one EP and one split followed . In 2011 singer Pasi Koskinen left the band and was replaced by Henri Koivula that same year.

In October 2014, the band signed the Season of Mist label and announced that they were working on a new album. In March 2015, the title of the album, Monotony Fields , was announced, and the song of the same name was released as a premiere on April 21, 2015. The album was released on June 15, 2015 as a CD version in digipak and as a double LP .

The band is on the 2007 published Skepticism - tribute album A Tribute to Skepticism - Entering the Levitation with a cover of ether represented.

style

The band's music is described as slow, atmospheric and oppressive and is dominated by organs , violins , deep guitar riffs and the deep growls . The music is based on the Funeral Doom of Skepticism , but differs from it in its more melodic structure and a large proportion of classical instrumental sounds.
