Deströyer 666 is an extreme metal band. It was founded in Australia in 1994 and the band's music combines influences from Thrash Metal , Black Metal and Melodic Death Metal . The band has been based in the Netherlands since the early 2000s .

Band history

Deströyer 666 was founded in 1994 by KK Warslut, guitarist of the Australian black metal band Bestial Warlust , as a solo project. In May of the same year, the musician recorded the demo Six Songs with the Devil , with Chris "Volcano" Broadway from Abominator serving as drummer . In 1995 Phil "Bulleteater" Gresik joined on bass and the band released the EP Violence is the Prince of This World on Modern Invasion. With the guitarist Shrapnel and the drummer Ballistic "Coz" Howitzer, the first line-up was complete in 1996 and the debut album Unchain the Wolves was also released on Modern Invasion. The subsequent Australian-and-Antichrist - tour in late 1996 was a financial disaster, according to the band.

In 1998 drummer Howitzer was replaced by Jarro Deceiver, and Ryan Marauder from Gospel of the Horns acted as session bassist on their live shows . After the release of the second album Phoenix Rising on Season of Mist 1999 Deceiver left the band in early 2000. The post of drummer was filled first with Shane Rout from Abyssic Hate and then with Eric de Windt from the Dutch death metal bands Sinister and Prostitute Disfigurement , before a new drummer was found in early 2001 with Mersus. Bassist Phil “Bulleteater” Gresik had already left the band in 2000 and Simon Berzerker came over for him.

A European tour with Immolation and Deranged followed in 2002, after which Shrapnel and Berzerker had to stay in the Netherlands because their visas had expired and they were no longer allowed to travel to Australia. Also due to the fact that drummer Mersus lived in Germany , the band now moved to Europe. KK lived first in Eindhoven and later in Denmark and Shrapnel in London. In 2003 Berzerker left the band and Matt, who lived in London , took over his position in early 2004 .

During the production of the third studio album Cold Steel ... For an Iron Age there were unforeseen problems with the record label , which did not produce the artwork as the band wanted. Frustrated, the band recorded Terror Abraxas in 2002 and released it on the small Dutch independent label Iron Pegasus Records . An Australian tour followed in 2005, followed by the Wolves-over-America tour of the USA in 2006 . After that, the band was about to break up due to the physical distance between the musicians, but began to write songs for a new album in April 2007. The recordings in Stockholm started at the end of 2008 and finished at the end of February 2009. The fourth studio album Defiance was released in July 2009, followed by a tour of Europe and North America. After graduation, the band began in autumn 2010 with the songwriting for the fifth album with the working title Siege , which has not yet been released. In the summer of 2012 the band announced on their website that guitarist Shrapnel had left Deströyer 666 for personal reasons. The band toured Northern Europe in autumn 2012 with various guest musicians on drums and guitar. In the following years Deströyer 666 did a few shows, including in December 2013 at the Eindhoven Metal Meeting and at the Hellfest in June 2014.

style

Deströyer 666's music is a brutal mix of Death Metal and Thrash Metal that hasn't changed much over the years. The music moves between 1980s Thrash / Death Metal borrowings and slow passages that are reminiscent of Burzum . KK Warslut sees his personal musical roots in Thrash Metal of the 1980s and in bands like Celtic Frost or Destruction . At the same time he does not describe the style of the band as Black Metal and adds that he can neither really define nor particularly like it; he also thinks "nothing of this mystical , philosophical bullshit that nobody understands anyway", so the lyrics of the band have neither anti-Christian nor satanic content, although some song titles suggest this:

“'I Am The Wargod' for example has nothing to do with the fight against Christianity. I am not a Christian, but my war is waged against stupidity. "

- KK Warslut in an interview with Art of Malice

KK Warslut stressed, however, that he had nothing against esoteric studies and practice, but saw rhetoric, dogmas and superstitions as ridiculous and preoccupation with sinister things as absurd; if something appears appealing or useful to him, it loses the appropriate connotation, "evil" and "sinister" are terms for prosecutors and priests. In the symbolism of Deströyer 666 the wolf and the caduceus can be found again and again. However, due to the nature of metal, KK Warslut can only express one side or aspect of the wolf via Deströyer 666. He uses the Hermes staff to express the dualism of the Gnostic deity Abraxas and does not see Deströyer 666 as a representation of the archetype Hermes , the Greek god of magic . He sees devil worship as probably not interesting over a longer period of time, just as Anton Szandor LaVey's modern Satanism, contrary to LaVey's statements, has been adopted by yuppies . How radical and shocking content can become socially acceptable can be easily seen from the metal culture.

controversy

On their 1997 album Unchain the Wolves greeted Deströyer 666 the RAC -Bands Fortress, Squadron and Brutal Attack , and partly to NSBM counted Abyssic Hate and Spear of Longinus . Also some lines of text, such as “I'm not ashamed to be white / Paying penance to fools is a waste of my life” (German: “I am not ashamed to be white / to atone for fools is a waste of life “) Raised the suspicion that the group was spreading right-wing ideas. There was also a 7 '' single called Satanic Speed Metal , the title song of which was abbreviated as SS Metal on the back . In the following years, however, such text content disappeared completely from the group's lyrics and they also appeared, for example, at the more left-wing Fuck the Commerce festival.

Regarding the above song text for Australian & Antichrist , KK Warslut commented several times in print media:

“The lyrix only say that I'm not ashamed of my skin color. Can you see how far society has come, if to even not to be ashamed of yourself is a crime. [...] Then I found out the political climate in Germany is alot different then here in Australia. If I had of known I think I would've been a lot more silent about these issues. [...] The bottom line is, D'666 are a metal band, not a political band. I might sing about the spirit of things as I see them, but not political strategy or ideal. And we have never been racist. (Emphasis in the original) ”

“The lyrics only say that I'm not ashamed of the color of my skin . See how far society has come when it is a crime not to be ashamed of yourself. [...] Then I found out that the political climate in Germany is quite different from here in Australia. If I had known about it, I would have been a little quieter with these things. […] The most important thing is, D'666 is a metal band, not a political band. There are times when I sing about the spirit of things and how I see them, but not as a political strategy or an ideal. And we were never racist. "

- KK Warslut : Interview in Fanzine Hellpike

At the end of 2008 / beginning of 2009 the band fell into twilight because they were said to have connections to the NSBM and right-wing bands in the rock-hard forum. This was based, among other things, on a participation by Keith Warslut on an album by the RAC band Raven's Wing, which consists of members of the band Fortress. In an interview, however, KK Warslut and Matt Razor denied all allegations. Warslut stated that he only wrote the song An Outlaws Life about Ned Kelly and only participated in two songs. The 1997 album Through the Looking Glass by Ravens Wing was marketed in Germany by Torsten Lemmer's right-wing rock label Funny Sounds.
