Spear of Longinus ( Engl ., Spear of Longinus ') is an Australian band that the leading representatives of the National Socialist Black Metal is one in Australia. The style of music changed over time from pure black metal to black metal with influences from punk and hardcore , speed metal and grunge . The band members appear under pseudonyms and use mailbox addresses to make prosecution more difficult.

biography

Spear of Longinus was founded in February 1993 by Griffiths (also "Baal Mjollnir") and Camazotz (real name Glenn Miller), both of whom had previously played in a band called Equimanthorn. In addition to the main Gnostic influence, Camazotz and Griffiths were inspired by bands like Possessed , Celtic Frost , Bathory , Sodom , Led Zeppelin , Kiss , AC / DC and Black Sabbath . In 1995 their first demo was released with the title Nazi Occult Metal . By an article in 1997 in Brisbane appearing The Sunday Mail , the band attracted public attention for the first time. Under the headline Pro-Nazi Band Hit Sour Key , the newspaper reported on a growing nationalist music scene in Australia, to which Spear of Longinus belongs. The band used a reprint of the article for the insert of their 1997 debut album Domni Satnasi . The album was recorded by the two band founders and SS Death Dealer from Gospel of the Horns (bass) and Tumulto (guitar). Tumulto left the band shortly afterwards for personal reasons and SS Death Dealer founded the band Vomitor in 1999 together with ex-Spear-of-Longinus member Griffiths , "more or less a Death - Thrash Metal band with a distinctly militaristic touch", who wears steel helmets with victory grunts on their side on promotional photos or at their concerts, where there are often fights in the audience . Hugh became the new bass player. In 1999 the EP Nada Brahma followed on the German label Burznazg Productions from the environment of the German neo-Nazi Hendrik Möbus , which had nothing to do with Varg Vikernes' label, which was later renamed Cymophane Productions . The office of Burznazg Productions was closed by the German authorities in connection with the new criminal proceedings against Möbus at the end of 1999 and the remaining approx. 500 copies of the album were confiscated. The band was banned from performing in Australia and Europe.

2001 appeared on Death to Mankind Records (now Die Todesrune Records) a record version of the EP Nada Brahma , which also contained the demo. In 2002 the studio album The Yoga of National Socialism followed with Vinland Winds, the label of Grand Belial's Key singer Grimnir Wotansvolk (Richard Mills). After the release, singer BJ joined the band. In 2004 a compilation with unreleased pieces was released. The 2007 album ....... and the Swastikalotus contained unreleased material from the recordings for the 2002 album. The last release so far was the 2008 EP Rune / Goetia . Runes from the "Armanen futhark " by Guido von List were used for the title of the EP .

Band name

The band name is borrowed from the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus . According to this, Saint Longinus is said to have stuck a spear into Jesus' side after his death . This spear is part of numerous conspiracy theories and also part of right-wing esotericism , as the spear, with the insignia of the Third Reich , is said to have been in the Vienna treasury. The group itself refers to the books of the writer Trevor Ravenscroft , who depicted Adolf Hitler as the last owner of the lance in his book The Spear of Fate . The lance enabled him with its power to "subjugate half of Europe" and is equated by the band with Odin's spear Gungnir and the Holy Grail . For the band he symbolizes both good and bad .

ideology

The band was founded under the impression of the second wave of Black Metal in Norway, although Camazotz does not identify with church arson and violent crimes. He described the band to In Your Face Magazine as traditional Satanists whose concerns are rebellion and overcoming Christianity . Griffiths names Adolf Hitler and Genghis Khan as sources of inspiration, expressed his admiration for the American right-wing extremist David Eden Lane ; Camazotz describes Hitler as a misunderstood avatar and describes himself as an "anti-Christian nationalist":

“I myself am totally anti-Christian, I hate everything about them and their blind faith, but people still follow with a passion. I wish that some of the people on our side has so much passion for what they believe in. My personal beliefs range from Satanik thought to NS Aryan spirituality. "

“For my part, I am absolutely anti-Christian, I hate the trappings and their blind faith, which people still follow with enthusiasm. I wish some of the people on our side were so passionate about what they believe in. My personal beliefs range from satanic ideas to National Socialist-Aryan spirituality. "

- Griffiths

The band openly adapts the symbolism and ideology of the National Socialists . For flyers she used pictures of the Wewelsburg from the time of the Third Reich . It is part of the esoteric right and sees the " Jew " as a traditional enemy of the " Aryan ". She not only sees him from a racial ideological point of view, but assigns all “Jews” to all who, in her opinion, “carry the Jewish spirit within them. Be it Aryans who were brainwashed, Negroid or Kazhar , "all of which" would hinder knowingly or unknowingly "the" Aryan race ". The aim of the esoteric warrior is to grow beyond being human and to free himself from what prevents him from crossing the material world and from what causes pain and suffering in this world, the status of subhuman , from samsara , the cycle of being to break out. The result of the liberation is the emergence of a "sun man" who is supposed to represent the superman . One suffers because of the ego, which confuses true being and thus controls it; in esoteric National Socialism these forces are characterized as Jewish. According to the band, this is more critical than ignorant xenophobia , they do not dream of attacking the State of Israel or people of Jewish faith who, like everyone else, lived out the drama of their own actions; however, the actions of the Jews affected all other creatures, as these egos would have amassed enormous powers over countless incarnations. The solution that is propagated is the destruction of the ego, which can only be achieved in oneself and is thus an internal transformation; this is referred to as the “final solution” (see also the final solution to the Jewish question ). This process includes, among other things, reflection / introspection, meditation , astral travel , transformation of impressions and generation of energy. In order to be able to work in this area, however, one must have a minimum of purity of blood and “Jewish spirit”.

In addition, the band members deal with elements of Indian religious teachings such as Kali-Yuga and yoga . The group textually connects these religions or doctrines of salvation with National Socialist motifs.

In a report by the Australia-Israel & Jewish Affairs Council on right-wing extremist music, the band is mentioned as an important neo-Nazi band from the circle of the Southern Cross Hammer Skins .

reception

The band is relatively unknown in the international mainstream, but is particularly popular in the Australian metal scene. The musicians of Deströyer 666 , among others, called themselves fans of the band. An interview by the British magazine Terrorizer with the group generated a lot of criticism from the readership. The magazine reacted with incomprehension and pointed out that she would judge bands according to their musical, but not their “political value” and that they had interviewed the band because they had “made a worthwhile contribution in the field of extreme music”; the decision to ignore a band because of their views is up to the readers.

In 1997 Rough Trade Distribution refused to distribute the Grand Belial's Key debut Mocking the Philanthropist because one of the band members was wearing a Spear of Longinus T-shirt in the CD inlay. Another member wore a t-shirt from the right-wing rock / metal band Bound for Glory .
