The path of freedom is a German post-black metal - band from Würzburg ( Bayern ).
history
Nikita Kamprad met Tobias Jaschinsky when he joined the band Frostgrim. However, this dissolved half a year after Kamprad had joined, as the members could not agree on a common style. Kamprad and Jaschinsky founded The Path of One Freedom. Both also played in the deathcore band Fuck Your Shadow From Behind , which existed from 2007 to 2010. Influences of Black Metal could also be heard in the music style of this band .
They recorded the album Der Weg einer Freiheit on their own and released it on February 1, 2009. They used a drum computer for the recordings . It is limited to 200 pieces.
On May 7, 2010 they released the album Der Weg einer Freiheit again via Viva Hate Records. The drum computer was replaced by the drummer Christian Bass. All other instruments were also re-recorded. The re-release also includes a bonus title. Bands like Agalloch and Xasthur are also under contract with Viva Hate Records .
The next release was the EP Agonie , released on July 1, 2011 . As part of the announcement it was also announced that Christian Bass had left the band due to time problems after the recordings for the EP. He was replaced by Tobias Schuler.
Since its inception, the group has played with well-known bands such as Wolves in the Throne Room , Neaera , The Black Dahlia Murder , War from a Harlots Mouth and Despised Icon , which are attributed to the hardcore scene. The band performed at the Summer Breeze 2011. The band also performed at the Barther Metal Open Air 2011 with well-known big names in the scene such as Skyforger , Finsterforst , Postmortem , Kromlek and Svartsot . In the same year the band could be seen at the Wolfszeit Festival in Crispendorf together with Eisregen , Fimbulvet , Wolfchant , Equilibrium , Heidevolk , Primordial , Varg and Watain .
On June 29, 2012, the group released the second album entitled Unstille via Viva Hate Records. In July 2012 the band played at the Extreme Festival in St. Pölten and at Hünxe and shortly afterwards appeared in the opening act for The Black Dahlia Murder and Darkest Hour .
The band announced on October 8, 2012 the departure of the singer Tobias Jaschinsky. Since then, Nikita Kamprad took over the vocals in addition to his guitarist activity. At the beginning of March 2013, the group started a support tour for Agrypnie through Germany , Austria and Switzerland together with Heretoir .
In 2013, further appearances followed, including at the Ragnarök Festival and the Summer Breeze 2013 and other headlining shows all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
In 2014 the band successfully toured Germany with The Ocean . Further appearances took place in the Czech Republic and at the With Full Force Festival .
After the release of the album Stellar in 2015 on the Season of Mist label , Der Weg einer Freiheit toured Europe with Downfall of Gaia for three weeks . Appearances at Hellfest Open Air and Graspop Metal Meeting followed, a planned US tour was canceled in September due to problems with entry permits.
In 2016, another major headlining tour was played across Europe, and in the summer the band performed for the first time at the Wacken Open Air and the Full Metal Cruise . Thereafter, without giving any reason, it was announced that they broke up with bassist Giuliano Barbieri on September 8, 2017. The festivals and the European tour with the Portuguese band Moonspell were played by three people with bass from the band. Then the new album Finisterre was recorded.
Shortly after the studio break, the band performed a few times across Europe with Heaven Shall Burn . At these concerts Nico Ziska was introduced as the new bass player. At the summer festivals 2017 they played with former guitarist Nico Rausch and in August 2017, after the Summer Breeze 2017, it was announced that Sascha Rissling would leave the band to concentrate on his studio business and other musical projects. After the release of Finisterre , the album was presented at concerts across Europe in autumn 2017.
style
The songs are mainly based on the typical Swedish Black Metal guitar style, which is kept quite melodious. Kamprad, who names Orlog , 1349 , Negator and Imperium decadence as well as Nagelfar , Drautran , Nocte Obducta , Emperor and Dissection as influences , is solely responsible for the compositions; compared to the band Frostgrim, they pursue “a more progressive style”. Michael Bembas from Metal-News.de compared the band with Agrypnie and Swedish Black Metal. Hawks from Sputnicmusic wrote that the band with their good production set themselves apart from Norwegian Black Metal, but compared the vocals with that of Nocturno Culto ( Darkthrone ).
The texts, which revolve around "personal feelings and sensory impressions, thoughts of the past or abysses of human society" as well as "fear, loneliness and hopelessness", are exclusively in German ; while “Black Metal is mainly based on a satanic background”, Kamprad is of the opinion that “that has little place in DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT”. In the song New Beginning you can hear a clip from a speech from Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator . The band still assigns itself to Black Metal.
"The only thing I can promise for the future is that THE WAY OF A FREEDOM will remain true to Black Metal and will not lose anything of its melodies, feelings and intensity."
reception
The debut album received mostly positive reviews, so that they were even awarded "the potential to unlock [...] Endstille and Negator " ( Anzo Sadoni : Metal-Hammer.de ) in the magazine Metal Hammer . Also Powermetal.de and Vampster -reviewed album positive. Her debut album has been described as one of the best in black metal in recent years.
The band was certified as having a high level of talent. Iskharian from dark-news.de wrote: "You should definitely keep an eye on the Franks, because a German Black Metal hope is growing here."
Finisterre from 2017 described Stefan Frühauf from dark-festivals.de as a "coherent total work of art somewhere between claim and hardness".
