Finsterforst is a German folk metal band. The band's name is synonymous with the Black Forest , the region from which the band comes.

history

The band was founded in late 2004. On the first demo / EP Wiege der Finsternis a drum computer was used because the band didn't have a drummer at that time. The EP was produced by Finsterforst itself and was released on March 30, 2006.

The album Weltenkraft , released in 2007, was distributed on the Worldchaos Production label. After problems with this label, the band switched to the label Einheit Produktionen for the 2009 album ... to death . The demo, released in 2006, as well as all subsequent albums, contain flute playing and vocal contributions by Sevan Kirder, a former member of the Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie . In 2010 the sold out EP was re-released together with the first album and a newly recorded bonus song under the title Urwerk .

Towards the end of 2009, singer Marco Schomas and the band went their separate ways. At the end of April 2010, Oliver Berlin was finally introduced as the new singer of Finsterforst.

In 2012 the band signed a contract with the Austrian record label Napalm Records . In November 2012, the band's third album, Rastlos, was released. It was album of the month on several online platforms. In 2013 the band made their debut at Wacken Open Air , followed by their first European tour with Trollfest  and Cryptic Forest in 2014 .

January 2015 the band released their fourth studio album, Mach dich frei . In November 2015 the band announced in a Facebook post that Johannes Joseph, one of Finsterforst's trademarks due to his accordion playing and clear singing, would no longer accompany the band at their concerts, but that he would continue to play for studio recordings. On August 2, 2019, the fifth and current album Zerfall was released , for the title song of which a music video was shot in a burned down brewery and which is supplemented by the deep vocals of Lars Vogel ( Heidevolk , Godenbloed).

style

The usual line-up of guitars , bass , drums and keyboards for metal has been expanded to include an accordion that is considered the band's trademark and can be heard leading the melody in all the pieces written so far. In addition, other unusual musical instruments for the genre can also be found in the group's compositions, for example a tin whistle or an oboe . The German lyrics are sung almost exclusively gutturally .

It is particularly noticeable and otherwise unusual for this genre that most of the songs are significantly excessively long. Up to and including the album Weltenkraft , the songs were usually between seven and eleven minutes long, then usually between ten and 20 minutes. From ... towards death there was always a more than 20-minute closing song on every studio album, which became longer than the previous one from album to album. With a length of 36:28 is Ecce Homo from the album decay currently by far the longest song of the band.

The EP #YOLO , released in 2016, is an exception . The band sound is enhanced here with a few more folk instruments, the songs are lyrically and musically much more cheerful than the previous albums. With four own songs and six cover versions (including Miley Cyrus, Michael Jackson) parallels to fun metal become clear.

Texts

In their early stages, the band's lyrics were mostly about nature and mystical creatures.

The "Baumharzschlürfer" mentioned in the song Des Waldes Macht on the album Weltenkraft refers to a review of the first EP.

On the second studio album ... towards death, the first song tells of the creation and the last of the destruction of the earth by man.

With the third album, Rastlos , the band released a concept album : the lyrics are about a protagonist who lost everything in his life and was forced to leave his homeland. It deals with hatred, love, longing for the past, hope for a better future, anger, and the desire for vengeance.
