Trollfest (also TrollfesT ) is a Norwegian folk metal band.

history

Jostein "Trollmannen" Austvik at the Rockharz 2015 in Ballenstedt .

Jostein “Trollmannen” Austvik and John Espen “Mr.Seidel” Sagstad had known each other since early childhood. After the contact broke off at some point, they met again after their school days in Oslo , where Sagstad was studying. Together with Sagstad's fellow students Martin “PsychoTroll” Storm-Olsen and Eirik “TrollBank” Renton, Trollfest was finally founded spontaneously at a party. The first completed song was “Drekka Konkurranse”.

The band released their first album "Willkommen Folk Tell Drekka Fest" on March 15, 2005 on the German label Solistitium Records. The German name of the album is “Welcome people to the drinking festival”. The second album, "Brakebein", was released on May 24, 2006 by Solistitium, although it had now been renamed Omvina. Brakebein is a concept album that is entirely dedicated to Brakebein's hunt for beer. The band had their first live appearance in 2007 at the "Barther Metal Openair" in Germany.

The third album "Villanden" was released on January 9, 2009 via the German label Twilight Vertrieb . It was followed by the Ep Ancient Elements , after which the collaboration with Twilight was ended.

In January 2011 Trollfest signed a recording deal with NoiseArt Records . The fourth studio album, "En kvest for den hellige grail", was released on April 22, 2011.

Initially founded only as a fun and side project of the musicians, Trollfest has developed into the main band over the last few years.

style

music

Inspired by the Finnish band Finntroll , a style of their own was developed that draws on many genres, such as humppa , tango , reggae , waltz and ska . In contrast to Finntroll, Trollfest do not use synthesizers, but rather real folk instruments such as acoustic guitar , accordion , trumpet , fiddle , mandolin and banjo . The music style of Trollfest can best be described as Folk Metal , but it has influences from almost all styles of Metal and can also be assigned to Fun Metal due to the humorous lyrics .

Bulgarian folklore is particularly prominent on the albums Villanden and En kvest for den hellige gral .

Texts

The lyrics are humorous and written in the fictional language of the trolls - Trollspråk - a mix of various Scandinavian languages (mainly Norwegian ) and German . According to ex-bass player PsychoTroll, they are primarily about partying and drinking trolls who like to eat priests or other people, especially their “fat” women, or fight for a free place to celebrate.

The idea for Trollspråk came about by chance. In the early days the band decided to want to sing in German because it sounds so "grim" (overgrimt). But since none of the band members really knew the German language , they began to write the lyrics relatively free of German grammar and to replace missing German words with Norwegian. In Trollmannen's opinion, the fact that the lyrics often only have a very superficial and meaningless character is of no further importance, since for him the music counts more than the text in a song.

The album Norwegian Fairytales is in Norwegian and is based on Norwegian sagas and myths.
