Nocte Obducta ( lat . Winged word 'under the veil of the night') is a German metal band.
history
Beginnings (1993–1998)
The band was founded in 1993 in Mainz under the name Desîhra . As Desîhra, she did not release a demo or perform publicly, but parts of the written material were used for later Nocte Obducta songs. After Desîhra broke up in 1995, Marcel Breuer (vocals, guitar), Magic (guitar) and Christoph Limbach (drums) remained. Benedict (keyboard and vocals) came along and the name was changed to Nocte Obducta. After various other line-up changes in the next few years, they took on Marcel Breuer (Cüühn, Thâlsperre, formerly Agathodaimon ) Matthias Rodig (Age of Aggression, Necrorgasm, formerly Agathodaimon), Torsten Hirsch ( Agrypnie , formerly Asaru, Area 51), Alex and Martin Wickler (Agathodaimon) 1998 the demo But the bloodless lips smile .
The first seven albums (1999-2005)
The first four albums were released on Grind Syndicate Media and the three albums between 2003 and 2006 on Supreme Chaos Records . In the course of time there were repeated problems within the band, which led to further line-up changes. Marcel Breuer was the only founding member from the Desîhra time to be constantly active.
Dissolution (2006-2010)
On June 17, 2006 the band announced that they would break up sequences of a hike after completing their eighth album . The reason for their breakup, the band named on their homepage, among other things, the lack of acceptance of their musical development and internal problems. As a result, there were also disagreements with the record company and the producer, which meant that work on the last album was interrupted until further notice.
The last line-up before the dissolution in 2006 consisted of Torsten “der Unhold” Hirsch (vocals), Marcel “Traumschänder” Breuer (vocals, guitar), Stefan “Draghkar” (guitar), Patrick Baumann (bass), Sebastian “Flange “Fürst (keyboard) and Matthias“ Matze ”Rodig (drums).
The musicians have been or are since then - sometimes together - active in a number of other projects. Torsten Hirsch founded the band Agrypnie even before Nocte Obducta was dissolved in 2004 , in which Patrick Baumann was also active as bassist between 2008 and 2011 and for whom Sebastian Fürst has been the permanent keyboardist since June 2012. Marcel Breuer, Stefan and Matthias Rodig founded the project Dinner on Uranos , initially planned as a kind of Nocte Obducta successor band, in 2006 , where the current Nocte Obducta bassist Heidig is also active. Patrick Baumann founded his solo project Melkor in the same year. Matthias Rodig was active with Agathodaimon until 2008, in the meantime played for Odium and continued for the Mainz doom metal band Necrorgasm and the Mainz thrash metal band Age of Aggression. Former bassist Martin "Sathonys" Wickler continues to play guitar with Agathodaimon. Marcel Breuer and Sebastian Fürst also run a number of other projects, e.g. B. Thâlsperre and Cühn.
Reunification (2010 – present)
In 2009 the band announced a successor to the 2001 album Schwarzmetall , with the participation of various ex-members. The album was released in November 2011 under the name Verderbnis (The reaper scratches every door) . Some former band members were also involved in the recording.
In 2012 the band joined u. a. at the Party.San and the Wolfszeit Festival as well as at the Boarstream and TNT Open Air. In November she also took part in the first edition of the Stage Secrets Festival in Oberhausen. After a four-time postponement, the album Umbriel (The Silence Between the Stars) was released on March 8, 2013, as did the two previous albums on the relatively small label MDD Records . A series of concerts and festivals followed ( Summer Breeze , Extremefest , Ragnarök Festival ). On July 8th, 2016 Mogontiacum was released - after the night has fallen and on May 26th, 2017 the last album Totholz - Ein Raunen aus dem Klammwald was released .
style
The assignment of the band to a certain genre is controversial. Nocte Obducta's style is often referred to as "avant-garde black metal" because the music is heavily inspired by black metal , but the band's ideology differs from it; on the part of the black metal scene , Nocte Obducta therefore mostly met with rejection. Marcel Breuer rejects the term " avant-garde " for his music and assigns it to Black Metal, but does not see the band as part of the Black Metal scene. He writes about the song Obsidian zu Pechstein :
"We throw up a little in gloomy scenarios about the so-called BM scene."
On the early albums, the blastbeat parts dominated, but with many breaks. The screeching song of Marcel Breuer was characteristic. From the EP Stille a change in style began. The music became more avant-garde and elements from other genres were added. The blast beats, which were an important part of earlier releases, were almost never used at all, and the vocals were clear. Nectar and ash spring were a bit harder again, but continued the style they had chosen . The metal components almost completely disappeared on sequences of a hike . On the album there are only two very dark pieces of over 20 minutes in length with only sparse vocals and speech samples . In some cases, comparisons were made with the genres of post-rock and art-rock . The sound quality of the releases is good, with the exception of the album Schwarzmetall , which was recorded over a weekend and has a raw demo sound typical of early Black Metal and was seen by some as a parody of the scene.
The lyrics are about nature, grief and death, but also about personal experiences and memories. You are in a metaphorical held style.
The members of Nocte Obducta come from the punk environment and mostly hold leftist views. Nevertheless, the band was temporarily assigned to the right-wing extremist scene, but the allegations did not last long.
