Wolfchant is a pagan metal band founded in 2003 in St. Oswald, Lower Bavaria .

Band history

Wolfchant was founded in August 2003 by Mario “Lokhi” Möginger, his brother Gaahnt, and the brothers Mario “Skaahl” and Daniel “Norgahd” Liebl in St. Oswald , Lower Bavaria . The first demo, The Fangs of the Southern Death , was recorded at the turn of 2003/2004 and released in spring 2004. The second demo, The Herjan Trilogy, followed in autumn 2004. Both demos were self-financed recorded in the Southern Deathcult Studios and published on their own.

In May 2005 Derrmorh joined the band as the second guitarist. Gaahnt took over the electric bass from Lokhi, who has since concentrated only on vocals. The recordings for the first studio album, Bloody Tales of Disgraced Lands , began in January 2005 and lasted until July of the same year. In August 2005, the band signed a record deal with the CCP Records label , through which the album was released on November 25, 2005.

The recordings for the second album took place in December 2006. In February 2007, the band separated by mutual agreement from their bassist Gaahnt, who left the band for professional reasons. Nattulv from Nebelburg Fortress was supposed to represent Gaahnt for a few live performances, but ultimately became a full member of Wolfchant. On April 6, 2007, the album previously recorded in December was released with the name A Pagan Storm .

In May 2008 Nattulv left the band for professional reasons and Bahznar then took over the position of bassist. In early 2009, the band ended the collaboration with CCP Records, as the contract for three studio albums had expired, and was signed by Massacre Records . The third studio album, Determined Damnation , was released on April 24, 2009 under this label .

At the beginning of August 2010 Derrmorh left the band to spend a semester abroad of his studies in the USA . The new member is now Ragnar, who has taken the position of guitarist. Derrmorh's return to the band is not planned. At the end of October 2010, the former guest singer Michael "Nortwin" Seifert joined the band as a second singer and full member. Lokhi still takes over the guttural singing , Seifert, however, sings clearly.

The fourth studio album, Call of the Black Winds , was released on February 25, 2011 via Massacre Records. On May 30, 2011, the band announced that they would be separating from bass player Bahznar "with immediate effect" for internal reasons. Until a replacement is found, “Sarolv” acts as the band's session bassist.

In 2013 they released their fifth album Embraced by Fire . Together with Alestorm , Arkona , Ex Deo , Thyrfing , Bornholm, Kalmah , and Varg they also went on the Paganfest European tour in 2013 .

In August 2014, Wolfchant split from guitarist Ragnar, keyboardist Gvern and bassist Sarolv. In April 2015 two new musicians were found with Gorthrim (guitar) and Sertorius (bass) and Wolfchant were complete again. The position at the keyboard is no longer occupied.

In October 2015 the band announced that they had finished recording their new album Bloodwinter , which was released in 2017.

In October 2018, the band announced on Facebook that they would be taking a break.

style

At first Wolfchant played heavily death-metal- influenced Pagan Metal . Over time, however, folk instruments and melodies increasingly found their way into the band's compositions. From A Pagan Storm onwards, there are more choral passages and instruments such as jew's harp, bagpipes and keyboard.

The texts of the older songs mainly deal with Nordic mythology , its legends and stories . A first change in the subject could be seen in Determined Damnation , which is mainly about manipulation by the church and the media. On Call of the Black Winds in particular , nature-related topics such as their increasing destruction by humans up to nature mysticism are increasingly taken up. In this context is also the album title, which should not be translated literally, but rather can be interpreted as the "call of the dark winds, the destructive winds". The texts are partly in English and partly in German .
