Kalmah is a melodic death metal band from Finland . The name comes from Karelian and means "To the grave" or "To death".
Band history
The band was formed in 1999. Four of the founding members formed the band Ancestor as early as 1991 , but after a lack of response decided to start over with Kalmah.
Shortly after the release of the demo Svieri Obraza , they managed to sign a contract with Spinefarm Records . After a few concerts in Finland, the band released their debut album Swamplord in the winter of 2000 , which was very well received in the scene. Altti ( Eternal Tears of Sorrow , For My Pain ... ) and Petri left the band and were replaced by Timo Lehtinen (from Catamenia ) and Janne Kusmin. Antti Kokko played for a year with Eternal Tears of Sorrow . In 2001 they returned to the studio after a few more shows in Finland and released their second album They Will Return in the same year . In 2002 they played at the Wacken Open Air .
Her third album, Swampsong , was released in 2003, started at Tico-Tico Studios and completed at Finnvox Studios .
In 2004 Pasi Hiltula left Kalmah, but Marco Sneck replaced him after the first rehearsal . Her fourth album, The Black Waltz, followed in 2006 . They played at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival 2006. In February 2008 their fifth album For the Revolution was released , followed in 2010 by album number six 12 Gauge .
On February 25, 2012, the band announced on their website that they had found a new keyboardist in Veli-Matti Kananen. Work on a new album has also been confirmed.
In 2013 they played some concerts as special guests on the Paganfest European tour together with Alestorm , Arkona , Thyrfing , Ex Deo , Wolfchant and Bornholm .
style
Kalmah is often compared to Children of Bodom and Norther , but has distinct Thrash Metal influences. The melodies are indeed as with Children of Bodom constantly present, but less dominant in the sound. In addition, Kalmah is less inspired by classical music.
The mascot of the band is the Swamplord (dt. Swamp Lord ). It appears on every album cover and also in the band's two previous videos (the first of which, however, is unofficial). In addition, the band called their music itself as Swamp Metal (dt. Swamp Metal ) because the marsh is one of the main themes in their music. It is supposed to reproduce the deadly atmosphere of the swamp.
