Arkona ( Russian Аркона ) is a Russian folk and pagan metal band. The band name goes back to a Slavic cult site at Cape Arkona .

The band was founded at the beginning of 2002 under the name "Hyperborea" by the current singer Maria Archipowa and the former drummer Alexander Koroljow. In February of the same year the group was renamed "Arkona". At the end of the year, the Rus demo was published.

Although the band had some local appearances in 2003, including with bands like Pagan Reign or Butterfly Temple , most of the members lost interest more and more. In September 2003, the singer Maria Archipowa was the only member left. In the following year she played the albums Wosroschdenije (German "rebirth") and Lepta with guest musicians. The following year Archipova found new band members with whom the album Wo Slawu Welikim! (German "In honor of the great") was recorded. In 2006, Schisn Wo Slawu was released, a live album containing the pieces from the demo as bonus tracks.

On October 31, 2007, the new album Ot Serdza k Nebu (German "From the heart to the sky") was presented at a concert in Moscow . The concert was recorded with six cameras and finally released in 2009 as a live DVD under the name Notsch Welesowa (German " Velesnacht "). Also in 2007 Arkona gave her debut concert in Central Europe at the German Rock for Roots Festival in Nauen . In 2008 they signed a record deal with the Austrian metal label Napalm Records , which released the album Ot Serdza k Nebu in a slightly modified version outside of Russia. In the same year they were guests at the Ragnarök Festival . A performance was planned there in 2009, but was canceled due to Mascha's second pregnancy.

In the spring of 2009 the band released the compilation Pojom Wmeste (German "We sing together") with 15 songs from previous albums. The pieces are all available as instrumental versions, only background choirs are available in some places. The band offered the compilation for free download from April 25, 2009 on the Russian download portal ifolder.ru .

On October 30th, 2009 the album Goi, Rode, Goi! released via Napalm Records. A music video for the title track was presented on October 7th. On March 17, 2010 the second video for this album, Liki Bessmertnykh Bogov, followed . Another video on Yarilo , which consists of live recordings, followed at the end of 2010.

On May 27, 2011 the EP Stenka na Stenku (German "wall to wall") was released. This contains, among other things, cover versions of two songs by Shaman and the Russian band Svarga , as well as two new, previously unreleased songs. The title refers to an old Russian custom in which two groups have a friendly fistfight among themselves. At the beginning of May a video was released for the title song of the EP.

In August 2011 the studio album Slovo (German "Das Wort") was released. With a playing time of almost 60 minutes it is significantly shorter than Goi, Rode, Goi! with almost 80 minutes; however, there are more songs on the album. At the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013 Arkona went on a European tour combined with a detour to the third "70,000 Tons of Metal" cruise. They also announced the completion of the new live album "Decade of Glory!" ("10 лет во Славу") known.

In 2013 they went on the Paganfest European tour with Alestorm , Thyrfing , Ex Deo , Wolfchant and Bornholm . An extensive headlining tour through North and South America followed in autumn, as well as several concerts in Europe together with Therion .

Her album Yav was released in 2014 and Khram in 2018 .

Most of the texts deal with Slavic history . According to Maria Archipowa, Arkona's music is apolitical and, in particular, free from fascist or anti-Semitic ideas. The versatile vocals of Mascha 'Scream' determine the style of the band's compositions. The music is predominantly a mixture of Folk Metal and Black Metal comparable to Finntroll or Månegarm . The melodies are often inspired by Russian music and dominated by flute sounds. Keyboard samples were used for the folk melodies on the first two albums, while real traditional instruments are increasingly used on more recent albums.
