Goi, Rode, Goi! -

Goi, Rode, Goi! ( Russian Гой, Роде, Гой! ) is the fifth studio album by the pagan metal band Arkona . It was released on Napalm Records on October 28, 2009 in Germany and on November 3 in the USA and Canada. In addition to the normal CD version, the album is also available as a double vinyl in an edition limited to 500 copies.

The title refers to the Slavic god Rod ( Russian Род ) and freely translated means "Praise be to Rod!". Rod represents probably the oldest and highest deity in Slavic mythology . Svarog later emerged from him .

history

The record label Napalm Records had become aware of the band through their appearance at the fifth Ragnarök Festival in 2008 . When Arkona were back in Russia, they were able to immediately sign a contract for the album Ot Serdca k Nebu ( Russian От сердца к небу ), which was released in 2007 . The album had only been released in Russia until then. After being re-released in 2008, the band went on a 30-day European tour, including performing at the Czech Brutal Assault Festival.

After a short break, the recordings for Goi, Rode, Goi! . At that time, the album was scheduled to run for about 70 minutes and a length of 12 songs. As with the previous albums, Vladimir Tscherepowski and Vladimir 'Volk' were responsible for many of the traditional instruments. In addition, other guest musicians, some from other pagan metal bands, as well as a Russian string quintet and a choir were invited. In total, more than 40 musicians were involved in this album.

Most of the recordings took place in the CDM Records studio in Moscow ; the guitars were recorded in the Astia Studio Sound in Lappeenranta , the drums in the Russian Gigant Records studio. In May 2009 all recordings were finally completed. The mastering was then carried out in May and June 2009 by band member Sergei 'Lasar' in the Deformation Sound Studio. During the production of Goi, Rode, Goi! the band was also able to release their second live DVD Noch Velesova ( Russian Ночь Велесова ) in May 2009 .

The final cover artwork was created by Belgian artist Kris Verwimp and was presented on May 25, 2009. Verwimp also made illustrations for each song, which are used in the CD booklet.

On September 3, a trailer for Goi, Rode, Goi! published, in which 12 songs of the album are presented during the running time of about eight minutes. Part of the artwork mentioned above can also be seen in the trailer. A month later, the music video for the title track Goi, Rode, Goi! presented.

The album was released on October 28th in Finland and Spain, on October 30th in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Benelux countries, France, Italy and Sweden, on November 2nd in the rest of Europe and on November 3rd in the USA and Canada.

On March 17, 2010, the second video for the album was presented. The video for the piece Liki Bessmertnykh Bogov is the band's first music video to be released in HD quality (720p). Another video for Yarilo followed on November 10, 2010. It mainly consists of live recordings that were made during the Paganfest tour 2010.

successes

Almost without exception, the album was received positively in the scene and clearly praised in many reviews. For example, Andreas Stappert in Rock Hard particularly emphasizes the varied vocals of Mascha 'Scream' and speaks of an "original and immensely catchy album". In the Metal Hammer awards Sebastian Kessler 5 of 7 points.

In the webzine The-Pit.de the album received 9.5 out of 10 possible points; In addition to the singing, reviewer Nicola Holm praised the atmosphere and diversity on the album. She describes Goi, Rode, Goi! as

“[...] a very multi-layered Pagan Folk Metal album that can hardly be surpassed in terms of diversity and mood. [...] What is particularly appealing about the album Goi, Rode, Goi! is the amalgamation of strings with electric guitars [...] or [their] combination with blastbeats [...] A startling, exotic sounding and luckily never-ending album that is gaining in size due to its complexity - a real work of art. "

- Nicola Holm : CD review

Only in a few places does she criticize “that Arkona gets lost a little too much in folk, that one begins to miss the part of heavy metal” and gives the piece Yarilo as an example .

In the Austrian webzine Stormbringer , too , this aspect is viewed rather negatively; the album receives 3 out of 5 points:

“Arkona sound a little more smoothly ironed and more predictable on their fifth studio album, Goi, Rode, Goi . […] The brutal sections were screwed back overall. Folk shares and epic phases are increasingly coming to the fore. "

- Django : CD review

Mathias Klammer, on the other hand, writes at metal.de : “The whole orientation of the band has constantly developed towards increasing hardness on the new disc.” He gives the album 8 out of 10 points and also praises the consistent further development of the band: “With Goi , Rode, Goi! the boys and girls continue their successful course [...] ”.

At powermetal.de , Goi, Rode, Goi! also received a positive response. Julian Rohrer awards 9.5 out of 10 points and is enthusiastic about the album:

“[…] What Arkona with Goi, Rode, Goi! delivering is for me not only a contender for the Pagan album of the year, but also for the top of the releases of the last few years in this category of the heather metal. [...] Close to the degree of perfection, Arkona combine catchy melodies, epic passages and nasty outbursts of anger [...] Even after repeated listening there is always something new on the album that inspires or surprises you. "

- Julian Rohrer : CD review

In her review on Musikreviews.de , Sabine Langner emphasizes that with this album Arkona clearly stands out from the multitude of other bands in the field of pagan metal: “ Goi, Rode, Goi! proves once again that folk metal doesn't have to be folk metal. ”Stefan Frühauf referred to Goi, Rode, Goi! in his review on dark-festivals.de as "unreservedly recommended."

In many reviews, the piece Na Moey Zemle (Eng. "In my country"), in which a large number of musicians from other pagan metal bands participated, is highlighted because of its well thought-out and varied composition. During the running time of around 15 minutes, the story of a warrior is told who goes out to find happiness and joy. He travels to different areas of Europe and meets people from other tribes there. The corresponding passages in the song are performed by the bands Heidevolk ( Netherlands ), Månegarm ( Sweden ), Menhir ( Germany ), Obtest ( Lithuania ) and Skyforger ( Latvia ) in their respective national languages. In the end, the warrior returns to his people and now realizes that happiness and joy have always been there. Among other things, this piece has been described as the “pioneer of the album”, “compositional masterpiece”, “absolutely successful feat” and “most brilliant folk / pagan piece in recent years”.

Contents of the songs

The title track Goi, Rode, Goi! is about Slavic warriors shipwrecked while returning from a sea voyage . When they realize that they have no chance of survival, they pray to the god Stribog that he will bring the news of their death to their families.

In the play Tropoiu Nevedannoi ( Eng . "On Unknown Paths") a man is described who worship his ancestors as a dark, evil cult and who slowly succumbs to it.

Nevidal ( Eng . "Miracle") is about a woman who in a dream foresees the fall of her homeland and the death of her people . The piece expresses how people can avert any danger from them if they act together.

Na Moey Zemle was mentioned in the Achievements section above.

Pritcha ( Eng . " Parable ") is the shortest piece on the album and essentially consists of a prayer to the god Rod.

In the play V Tsepiakh Drevney Tainy ( Eng . "In Rows of Ancient Secrets") a man stands at the grave of his ancestors and vows to protect his homeland and to revive old, local traditions.

The play Yarilo is about the Slavic Spring Festival , during which a celebration is held in honor of the spring god Jarilo .

Liki Bessmertnykh Bogov ( Eng . "The Faces of the Immortal Gods") is about a man who has lost his will to live. On the other hand, he is afraid of death and therefore tries to escape reality.

Kolo Navi (Eng. "Kolo des Nav"; Nav is the immaterial world next to Jav and Prav, the three worlds described in the book of Veles ) describes the journey of the soul of a fallen warrior into the underworld. Similar to the first track on the album, the soul worships the wind god Stribog to bring the news of his death to the family of the fallen.

Korochun is a purely instrumental piece and is named after the Slavic winter solstice .

The piece Pamiat ( Eng . “The memory”) is a prayer to the Slavic gods and calls them to rise and to revive the old faith.

Kupalets describes the celebrations for the Slavic festival of the summer solstice . The word kupalets refers to the fire that is lit at this festival. (See also: Ivan Kupala Day , Midsummer Festival )

The play Arkona is about the last Slavic fortress, the Jaromarsburg at Cape Arkona , which was destroyed in 1168 in the course of Christianization . Arkona therefore symbolizes the old traditions of Slavic mythology that are waiting to be rediscovered.

In the last piece, Nebo Hmuroe, Tuchi Mrachniye (Eng. "Gloomy sky, bright clouds"), a young woman learns of the death of her husband. Tormented by loneliness and despair, she drowns herself in a river. This piece consists of three sections: After the actual song, there is a phase in which only natural sounds such as birdsong can be heard. Then the album ends with a flute instrumental.

Guest musician

A total of over 40 musicians contributed to the album. In addition to the typical instruments in metal ( electric guitar , electric bass , drums ), many of the traditional instruments such as balalaika , jew's harp , some flutes , drums and other percussion were played by the band members themselves. Vladimir Tscherepowski, who has already been involved in a few previous albums, took over many wind instruments from Russian folklore, such as flutes, gaita , shellika and ocarina , together with Vladimir 'Volk' . The accordion player was Alexander 'Olen' from the Russian folk metal band Kalevala . The choir singing comes mainly from Ilja 'Wolfenhirt' ( Svarga ) and Alexander Schmel (Kalevala).

The singers in the aforementioned piece Na Moey Zemle : Erik Grawsiö and Jan Liljekvist from Månegarm , Baalberith and Sadlave from Obtest , Peter and Edgar 'Zirgs' from Skyforger , Heiko Gerull from Menhir and Joris 'Boghtdrincker' and Mark 'Splintervuyscht' from Heathen people . Jan Liljekvist also plays the violin in this piece , Kaspars from Skyforger Bagpipes and Kokle .

In the title track Goi, Rode, Goi! Cosmin 'Hultanu' Duduk plays the tulnic , an instrument similar to the alphorn . In the piece Nebo Hmuroe, Tuchi Mrachniye , Dmitri 'Wetrodar' ( Tverd ) plays the mandolin and Wassili Derewjanni ( Ashaena ) plays the domra . The latter also occurs in the play Yarilo .

In addition, a Russian string quintet under the direction of Alexander Koslowski and a women's choir from the Gnessin Institute in Moscow under the direction of Sofia Sultanova were involved in the recordings.
