from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stribog is a Slavic god with unclear jurisdiction, who is mostly interpreted as a wind deity . Along with Perun , Dažbog , Simargl , Mokosch and Chors, he was one of the six “main gods” whose idols Prince Vladimir I had set up in Kiev in 980 .

His name is in the Primary Chronicle , in a Russian translation of John Chrysostom from the 11th century and in Igor's narrated in the winds that contrary to blow the army Igors and send arrows from the sea, called "grandson Stribogs". There are indications of a further spread of his cult in the form of place names from Poland , Russia and the area of the Elbe and Baltic Sea Slavs .

The etymology is uncertain. The name is associated with the Persian Sribagha (the beautiful god), an epithet of the creator god Ahura Mazda , but a Slavic origin is also discussed.

He has been the namesake of the Stribog Mountains on the Brabant Island in Antarctica since 2015 .
