history

Gebsattelbrücke seen downhill

After the construction of Corneliusstrasse was planned in the Munich bridge construction program, the Obere Au should also be better connected to the city center by a road in the extension of this bridge. To take the serpentine road up the high bank of the Isar would have meant a break in the elevated road that runs near the edge of the slope. Since this street was very important for traffic, a different solution was found: the new street, which was named Gebsattelstraße after the first Archbishop of Munich and Freising Lothar Anselm von Gebsattel (1761–1846), became perpendicular to the edge of the slope The Gebsattelberg was led up in a deep ditch and the Hochstraße was led over this cut with the Gebsattelbrücke.

The bridge was built in 1901 according to the plans of the architect Theodor Fischer . It is a listed building. The building was renovated from May 1998 to January 1999.
