Thyrfing is a Viking Metal - band from Sweden .

The name of the band comes from the cursed sword Tyrfing from Norse mythology .

history

Joakim Kristensson, Patrik Lindgren and Thomas Väänänen were members of a metal band from 1994, whose name, line-up and style of music kept changing. Ultimately, a permanent line-up was formed, consisting of Thomas Väänänen on drums, Patrik Lindgren on bass and Joakim Kristensson guitars and vocals, and the band was named Pantheon. The members came up with the idea of forming a new band. After rehearsals and in her spare time, Kristensson played drums and Lindgren played guitar. Together with bassist Kimmy Sjölund and guitarist Peter Löf they founded a new band. After several name changes, they decided on the name Thyrfing.

After a few months the band had finished four pieces and recorded them under what they said was “very primitive circumstances” (with a four-track device in the rehearsal room, very poor microphones and amplifiers, etc.). The demo recording was titled Solen svartnar (The Sun Goes Black) and the lyrics are about Ragnarök . According to Thyrfing, the recording was made without any serious aims, published in an edition of 100 copies and sent to some Swedish fanzines and sold via underground mailings. While the band Pantheon was still active, Thyrfing was increasingly becoming a "real band"; she found the singer she needed in Thomas von Pantheon. She found a real studio for her next recording. The recordings were made on the second demo cassette Hednaland (Heidenland), which contained four "real" and three instrumental pieces and, unlike Solen svartnar, was sent to record companies, magazines and distributors around the world.

In early 1997 the band was contacted by the Dutch record company Hammerheart Records . Hednaland wanted to publish this on MCD, but the band was no longer satisfied with the material and suggested recording an album instead. Hammerheart Records agreed to the proposal and signed Thyrfing. The band spent the first half of the year rehearsing, writing new pieces and performing a few concerts in Stockholm. In July 1997 the band recorded their debut album at Sunlight Studio with the assistance of Tomas Skogsberg and Fred Estby of Dismember . After the recordings, the band looked for a new guitarist, mainly for live performances, but also for future recordings. She found this in Vintras, the former guitarist of Funeral Mist . The self-titled first work was published in March 1998. During the compositions and rehearsals for their second album, the band began to doubt Vintras as a suitable guitarist; According to the official biography, he lacked interest and commitment, which is why he had to leave Thyrfing. Valdr Galga was recorded in Abyss Studios' Studio B with the assistance of Tommy Tägegren. For future live performances, Henke Svegsjö of Ancient Winds Thyrfings became the second guitarist. The album was released in March 1999, a year after its debut.

The record company Grim Rune Productions showed interest in a re-release of the first demo recording Solen svartnar and released it in May 1999 with an edition of 300 copies as a 7-inch EP. On May 23, 1999, the band gave their first appearance outside of Sweden on the Black Stage of Dynamo Open Air . She also played on her first tour, Summer Clash II, with Six Feet Under , Vader , Enslaved , Cryptopsy and Nile ; In the run-up to the tour, Hammerheart Records' subsidiary Unveiling the Wicked released a CD with both demo recordings under the title Hednaland in a limited edition of 2000 copies. After the tour, the band took a break to get the energy they needed for the upcoming album.

2000 the band again in Studio B, their third album primal power on. Before it was released, she toured the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany with the bands Primordial and Shadowbreed, also under contract with Hammerheart Records . In August 2000 the album was released.

In autumn 2001 the band recorded the album Vansinnesvisor in the Dug-Out studios with the famous Daniel Bergstrand . It was released in July of the following year and made Thryfing a little better known. In 2005 their album Farsotstider was finally released.

In March 2007 singer Thomas Väänänen and guitarist Henrik Svegsjö left the band due to a lack of motivation. Väänänen was replaced by ex- Naglfar singer Jens Rydén. The second guitar position has not been filled for the time being. In 2008 Thyrfing played a few concerts as a special guest on the Heidenfest tour in Germany. In addition, Thyrfing performed in Lichtenfels in 2009 at the Ragnarök Festival and the Party.San Open Air .

In 2013 the current album De ödeslösa was released. Together with Alestorm , Arkona , Ex Deo , Wolfchant and Bornholm, the band went on the Paganfest European tour in 2013 .

In 2015 Thyrfing played in Bullhead City Circus on the Headbanger Stage of Wacken Open Air .
