Butterfly Temple is a Russian metal band.

history

The three musicians Alexey "Lesyar" Agafonov, Sergei "Aven" Avanesov and Michael Shmatko formed a band in 1993, and in May 1995 they recorded the demo The Great Pentacle of Solomon , which contained seven songs. Since the band did not have a name until then and they finally agreed on Butterfly Temple, this is considered the official formation of the band. Dobryi joined the band as a drummer in 1995, but left the band a year later due to musical differences of opinion. With Valeri Ostrikov a second guitarist was added. The first demo, Nahaimal , was released in February 1996. In September of the same year, the band's first appearance took place in a club in Moscow, not far from the Kremlin and Red Square .

At that time, the musicians had several side projects that musically covered a wide range from ambient to melodic Black Metal . With the release of the second demo in November 1997 under the name Black Glory , all side projects were discontinued and the musicians concentrated only on Butterfly Temple. Two further demos, Kniga Welesa and Golos Krowi , appeared in 1998. Shortly afterwards, these were published again as a compilation. The debut album Veles (named after the Slavic deity Veles ) was released on November 9, 1999 via Independent Records. Bassist Andrey Nagaytsev joined Butterfly Temple shortly before the album began and was kicked out of the band after the recordings were completed due to personal differences. Back then as a guest musician, Ksenia also appeared on the album for the first time as a singer, who then became a full member of the band. The band found a new bass player with Alexander Nikulin in early 2000. He first appeared on the band's second studio album, Kolesso Tschernoboga , which was released in 2001 on Irond Records, the first Russian independent metal label.

Sny sewernowo morja was released in 2002 as the band's third studio album. It was followed in spring 2003 by Tropoiu krowi po wole roda! . Over time, due to personal differences, it became increasingly difficult to work with singer Ksenia, so that she was fired from the band in the summer of 2004. Singer Alexey "Lesyar" Agafonov left the band in June of the same year. He was replaced by Alexey "Miron" Mironov, who had previously been active in the grindcore / death / thrash metal band Eternal Sick .

The recordings for the fifth studio album Vremya Mary proved to be very complicated . For example, the entire drum tracks that had already been recorded were lost and had to be re-recorded on an inferior drum kit within a few days. Other mishaps also occurred. The album was finally released on May 19, 2005. Well -known guest musicians such as Manni Schmidt , rock singer Olga Dzusova and Oleg “Mission” Mishin, the guitarist and flutist of the Moscow power metal band Catharsis, appeared on the album for the first time .

At the turn of the year 2005/2006 singer Mironov left the band again because there was no musical agreement. Since then Abramov has taken on both the (male) clear and the guttural singing. The sixth studio album, called Sa solnzem wsled , was released in autumn 2006.

In the spring, the singer Polina Yashkova joined Butterfly Temple and left the band in October 2009 due to musical differences.

Band name

The name Butterfly Temple has no deeper meaning and only arose from the combination of the two terms. The band decided to use numerology and a "wretched" English-Russian dictionary to find a name. They counted off their own names according to the rules of numerology, opened the dictionary page corresponding to the number formed, counted the lines again and found the word Temple . Since they found this alone too boring, the word butterfly was put in front of it, as this sounded nice in the opinion of the band.

style

Initially, the band began to play Doom Metal combined with Pink Floyd- inspired psychedelic rock . Due to the musicians' strong interest in Slavic cosmogony and mythology , however, she soon turned to pagan metal . In the mid-1990s, the music became steadily heavier; At this time the band was particularly influenced by Moonspell , Anathema and Paradise Lost . Nevertheless, the music remained variable and did not just approach a certain genre. There are numerous elements of Black Metal on Sny sewernowo morja , while the successor, Tropoiu krowi po wole roda! , is relatively thrash-metal- heavy. Pure folklore can also be found on the band's albums, occasionally with female singing and typical folk instruments such as the balalaika .

What all albums have in common, however, is that Russian folklore plays an important role in music . Sometimes there are also purely folk songs, occasionally with female singing and typical folk instruments such as the balalaika . The lyrics are often about old Slavic and Scandinavian gods , or it's poetry about the beauties of nature, sometimes just Russian sages. Both on the demos in the early days and on the fifth studio album, Vremya Mary , there are numerous anti-Christian themes.
