Heretoir is a band founded in Augsburg in 2006 that combines post-rock and shoegazing influences with modern metal .
history
The band was founded in 2006 as a solo project by David "Eklatanz" C. ( Agrypnie ). In 2008 a self-produced demo was published with the name Existence , which in 2009 with an additional title as Existence. EP was released on the Chinese label Pest Productions.
After two more compilation entries and the split release Wiedersehen - our hope with the band Thränenkind under the banner of Pest Productions, Heretoir signed a contract for four releases with the German label Northern Silence Productions in April 2010. In the same year Matthias “Nathanael” S. (Agrypnie, Thränenkind) joined the band as bassist and background singer , but did not participate in the band until 2012 as a composer.
On February 25, 2011, the self-titled debut album Heretoir was released via Northern Silence Productions. It contains nine pieces with a playing time of just over 50 minutes. The album cover was designed by the well-known French artist Fursy Teyssier (ex- Alcest , ex- Amesoeurs , Empyrium live, Les Discrets ). The album artwork comes from the French artist Metastazis, who has already worked for artists such as Alcest, As I Lay Dying , Enthroned , Gorgoroth , Morbid Angel , Paradise Lost , Secrets of the Moon or The Black Dahlia Murder . The lyrics and the concept of the album should reflect the thoughts and feelings of a protagonist who has lost a loved one and should therefore provide an insight into the fine line between grief, longing, anger and hope.
In October 2011 Heretoir played their first concert at the Autumn Depression Festival in Essen with the help of the newly added musicians Maximilian "MF" (live guitar) and Emanuel "Belial" D. (live drums) and it wasn't long before the Band has shared stages with bands such as Agalloch , Alcest , Graveworm , Negură Bunget , Sólstafir , Secrets of the Moon or Vreid at numerous concerts and festivals such as the Fimbul Festival 2012 .
At the same time as the band's first concerts, the EP was released. completely re-recorded. Together with the original version and numerous bonus tracks , this new recording was released on August 24, 2012 under the title Substance via Northern Silence Productions.
After a first tour in March 2013 ( Aetas Cineris Tour 2013 with Agrypnie and Der Weg einer Freiheit ) through Germany , Austria and Switzerland , the band played in 2014 and 2015 at renowned festivals such as the Summer Breeze Festival and Rockharz Open air . At the same time, the band was working on the completion of their second studio album The Circle , which was finally released on March 24, 2017 via Northern Silence Productions.
As part of the release of The Circle , the band went on an extensive European tour with Ghost Bath and King Apathy in May and June 2017 , which included concerts in over 15 European countries. Heretoir also played three German tour shows with Imperium Dekadenz in November 2017 as the opener of the Norwegian Enslaved and went on another ten-day European tour in December 2017 with the bands Kalmah , Nothgard and Lost In Gray.
style
The style combines influences from shoegazing , ambient and metal, this blend was introduced by the French group Alcest . Heretoir's music was initially purely acoustic, but over time it changed towards metal . Due to the musical style change on the debut album, which brought with it a strong integration of calmer influences such as post-rock and ambient, the band was increasingly compared to Alcest by the press.
There are very few elements from Black Metal , which is mainly expressed by the distorted vocals. Heretoir, however, do without typical black metal elements such as corpse paint , satanic texts and a harsh production. Instead, the band relies on a smooth sound with a lot of reverberation, the guitar mainly plays chords and tremolo riffs with simple harmonies and melodies, which above all emphasize the atmosphere.
The debut was mostly positively received by the specialist press, with praise above all for the atmosphere, but there was also criticism: The harder passages seem out of place and the riffs are "as original as a trout on the fish market".
The singing was perceived ambiguously. While Moritz Grütz from metal1.info praises the “wistful screeching song”, Jan Wischowski from metal.de describes it as “emotionless screaming”.
