history

Ghost Bath was founded in 2012. Due to the release of their debut EP named after the band on the Chinese label Solitude Productions and the debut album Funeral on Pest Productions , also from China, it was suspected that Ghost Bath was a Chinese band Chongqing trade . The band themselves had no intention of bringing this flaw to the media's attention, as the musicians didn't reveal any private details in their work with Ghost Bath and instead wanted to connect everyone through their music.

The identities of the musicians and their origins only became known after switching to the German metal label Northern Silence Productions , after the record company sent official press material for the second album Moonlover to the media. Moonlover was first released via Northern Silence in 2015. After another change of record company to Nuclear Blast , Moonlover was reissued with a bonus track in 2016, with Josh Schroeder producing the album.

In August 2016, Ghost Bath played their first European tour in Europe and supported groups such as Converge , The Black Dahlia Murder , Dying Fetus , Goatwhore , Minsk and Thränenkind at selected concerts . Before that, Ghost Bath played for the first time on a national level in Canada and along the US west coast .

In April 2017, the third album, Starmourner, was released, which, alongside the previously released albums Funeral and Moonlover, marks the end of an album trilogy. At this point the band was on a North American tour with the dream thrash band Astronoid . Immediately afterwards a European tour with Heretoir and King Apathy followed , which, in addition to stops in Germany , Austria and Switzerland, also had concerts in Finland , Estonia , Lithuania and Latvia for the first time as well as an appearance at Hellfest in France . In August and September, Ghost Bath will open the Double Homicide Tour by Thy Art Is Murder and Decapitated , which will also tour North America .

style

The music is described as a mixture of aggressive elements of Black Metal with the musical atmosphere of Post-Rock , which is reminiscent of Deafheaven and their album Sunbather . The musicians try to contrast the dark and gloomy atmosphere of Depressive Black Metal with the happy, uplifting and hopeful sound of the instruments. According to the English-speaking Metal Hammer , Ghost Bath combine post-black metal with the DSBM . Bands like Darkthrone , Behemoth , Agalloch , but also representatives of Cascadian and atmospheric Black Metal like Wolves in the Throne Room and Austere as well as the DSBM band Silencer are named as musical influences .

Dennis Mikula was inspired by Sigur Rós , who invented a fantasy language in order to adapt the singing to the music. However, according to Mikula, lyrics can limit or glorify the effect of the songs, so that he usually dispenses with words and instead creates emotions through shouting and the power of the vocal cords.

Band name

The name Ghost Bath describes a suicide method in which you drown your own body in a body of water. The name was chosen after the writer Sylvia Plath tried unsuccessfully to drown herself in the ocean. According to Mikula, he connects this case with his own emotions in his music.

Identities and origins

For a long time, the identities and origins of the musicians remained largely unknown. It was only after the German label Northern Silence Productions sent press material to the media that it became known that the musicians were from Minot , North Dakota . Previously it was speculated that Ghost Bath was a Chinese black metal band . However, even at the time at Pest Productions from China it was suspected that it would not be a national group. In an interview between the label operator and Vice Magazine , it was said that he himself did not initially know anything about the origin of the musicians and assumed that they came from the People's Republic of China .
