Deafheaven is a US blackgaze - band that in 2010 San Francisco was founded by George Clarke and Kerry McCoy. Her second album, Sunbather , released in 2013 , received international acclaim and made it into the top lists of the year by numerous music critics.

Deafheaven's musical style draws its influences from black metal , shoegazing and post-rock , the band is therefore attributed to the Blackgaze. Deafheaven completely dispense with style elements common in Black Metal such as corpse paint , pseudonyms or satanic texts.

Band history

Foundation and demo (2010)

Deafheaven formed in February 2010 in San Francisco as a duo consisting of singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, both of whom had previously played in the grindcore band Rise of Caligula. The band name came about spontaneously, but George Clarke thinks it possible that he unconsciously remembered a passage in William Shakespeare's 29th Sonnet ("And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries ...").

Clarke and McCoy recorded a demo with producer Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden Studios in April 2010 . The producer had to finance the production costs of 500 US dollars in advance, since Clarke and McCoy lived almost penniless in a 16-person shared apartment. Since the musicians did not have an electric guitar , the songs were composed on a cheap acoustic guitar and then recorded on loaned instruments from the studio. The four-song demo combined elements of screamo with stylistic elements of black metal and post-rock . After the demo was positively discussed by some music bloggers, Clarke and McCoy decided to perform live with additional musicians in June 2010. Deafheaven became a quintet through the addition of bassist Derek Prine, guitarist Nick Bassett and drummer Trevor Deschryver .

Record deal and Roads to Judah (2010-2012)

Deafheaven signed a recording deal with Deathwish Inc. in December 2010. The first release was a 7 "vinyl single with the tracks Libertine Dissolves and Daedalus from the demo.

The debut album Roads to Judah was released on April 26, 2011. The title refers to the name of a streetcar line (N Judah) in Deafheaven's hometown of San Francisco. The lyrics deal with Clarke's drug addiction and excessive lifestyle. Roads to Judah received positive reviews and was featured on annual leaderboards.

Singer George Clarke performing in Barcelona, Spain (2012)

To promote Roads to Judah , Deafheaven toured the United States with the Canadian noise rock band KENmode and later with Russian Circles . They performed in Austin, Texas at the South by Southwest Festival, the Sound and Fury Festival in California, and the Northside Festival in New York. In 2012 Deafheaven toured Europe and played a. a. seven shows in Germany and three in Austria.

As part of a series of free live albums by Deathwish Inc. record label artists, Live at The Blacktop was released in 2011 , a concert recorded January 15, 2011 in Bell Gardens, California. In October 2012 Deafheaven contributed two Mogwai cover songs ( Punk Rock and Cody from the 1999 album Come On Die Young ) to a split single with Bosse-de-Nage.

Sunbather , New Cast, and Critical Success (2013 to Date)

In September 2011 Deafheaven announced that they were working on new material for a second album. At the time, McCoy described the new material as "faster, darker, much heavier, and a lot more experimental" than Roads to Judah . In December 2012, however, Clarke stated that the new material was "less melancholic and not so Black Metal centered, but rather opulent, rocky, sometimes even poppy." At the end of 2012, Daniel Tracy joined the band as the new drummer and was actively involved Songwriting that Clarke and McCoy had mastered on their own up until then: "His contribution as a drummer is great - he has shaped the record to a large extent," commented Clarke. "He added his style as a drummer to the existing song structures."

In January 2013, the second album with producer Jack Shirley was recorded within five days at Atomic Garden Studio in Palo Alto, California and released on June 11, 2013 under the title Sunbather . Clarke explains the album title as follows: "I ended up calling the album Sunbather because it describes the feeling the album gives me. It expresses the sadness, frustration and anger that accompany the pursuit of perfection. Man dreams of warmth and love, despite the pains of idealism ".

The album cover was designed by Nick Steinhardt, the guitarist of the band Touché Amoré , who also designed the cover for Roads to Judah . The pink-orange shades and the half-faded lettering are intended to convey the visual impression that arises when you look directly into the sun with your eyes closed.

Sunbather received positive to euphoric reviews from critics: On Metacritic the album reached 92/100 and was declared the best-discussed album of 2013. It peaked at number 130 on the Billboard 200 charts.

In addition to drummer Daniel Tracy, who was already part of the Sunbather recordings, bassist Stephen Clark and guitarist Shiv Mehra joined the band in 2013. The founding members Clarke and McCoy said that the previous members had left the band because of the tough touring life and the unsatisfactory financial situation. In 2013/2014 Deafheaven played numerous headlining shows and festival appearances in the USA, Europe and Asia.

On August 25, 2014, the new song "From the kettle onto the coil" was published as a free download on the website of the TV channel Adult Swim .

On October 23, 2014, the band announced the release of their third album for 2015 with a short Twitter tweet ("LP3 2015"). In July 2015, the album title "New Bermuda" was announced and a short promo video was released. The album was released on October 2, 2015. It contains five songs and does without the independent acoustic interludes of its predecessors. With a running time of 46:35 minutes, it is significantly shorter than "Sunbather" (59:58), but longer than "Roads to Judah" (38:22).

“New Bermuda” received mostly very positive reviews, achieved a value of 85 on Metacritic.com and thus placed 42nd of all albums released in 2015. It was very high on numerous album of the year lists, such as B. 10th place in the best metal albums of the year on stereogum.com In the Billboard 200 charts, it reached position 63.

In metal circles, the album was recorded mixed and was considered by some critics as evidence that Deafheaven is overrated by the general music press and that it is a "hipster band" to be rejected. The fact that "New Bermuda", unlike the two previous albums, not only contains stylistic elements from Black Metal and Shoegaze, but also more traditional Metal riffs in the style of Pantera , was interpreted by the band as an ingratiation to the metal community. The metal blog "Angry metal guy" even published two reviews, a positive (4 out of 5 points) and a negative (2.5 out of 5 points).

Deafheaven's musical approach to the broader spectrum of metal beyond black metal was also reflected in the line-up of the North American tour that began on January 15, 2016, with the headliners Lamb of God and Anthrax . From March 2016 Deafheaven intend a European tour with 23 appearances, as support you will be accompanied by the musician Amalie Bruun, who is also controversial in metal circles, who reinterprets Black Metal with female chorale singing as "Myrkur".
