Vreid ( no . 'Zorn', 'Wut') is an extreme metal band from Norway. It is a follow-up band to Windir .

Band history

After the death of Windir singer Valfar, bassist Hváll decided to form a new band in order to remain productive. From the old line-up, guitarist Sture, who now also took over the vocals, and drummer Steingrim joined. The second guitarist Ese was added. Founder Hváll wrote most of the material for the debut album Kraft . This was recorded in his studio 1184 in summer 2004 and mixed in the Subsonic Society studio in Oslo . A contract was signed with Tabu Recordings for three albums. Kraft was released under license from Candlelight Records on October 4th in Norway and October 18th worldwide . In the same month followed a tour of Norway with Enslaved . In February 2005 they went on tour again with Enslaved; this time it went with 29 concerts across Europe. In June they started practicing the already written material for a new album, in September Vreid re-entered the 1184 studio and began recording Pitch Black Brigade . Release dates were April 10 in Norway, April 24 in Europe, and May 16 in the US. Again there were several concerts and appearances at several festivals; The highlight was the Wacken Open Air . The third album, I Krig , was released on June 22nd, 2007, the ideas came up in 2006 on tour. In terms of content, it is based on a collection of texts by the poet Gunnar Reiss-Andersen , who worked through the previous seven years with his work. From May to October 2008 Vreid recorded the fourth album Milorg , which was released in 2009. The title comes from the Norwegian resistance group Milorg from the time of the Second World War.

In 2010 the guitarist Ese was replaced by the former Windir member Stian "Strom" Bakketeig.

Music style and lyrics

Vreid's music is very different from Windir. It contains influences from 1970s rock , classic heavy metal of the 1980s and Norwegian black metal . AllMusic's Alex Henderson wrote in his review of the debut that the band was “obviously well aware of the Thrash Metal and punk legacy of Black Metal”, and in the successor to Pitch Black Brigade , the band is celebrating these roots. On I Krig, however, the band approached Windir and Folk Metal stylistically . The album was heavily influenced by Scandinavian folk . Milorg has been compared to Enslaved , Emperor and Dødheimsgard , with influences from Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden shining through some pieces .

According to Jarle “Hváll” Kvåle, the band “was never part of any scene” and “doesn't see themselves as a black metal band either”. Vreid's texts are inspired by historical events; Pitch Black Brigade is about dystopias , both I Krig and Milorg were concept albums about the liberation of German-occupied Norway in World War II . V is also about liberation, but from a broader historical and philosophical point of view.
