Windir ( Old Norse or Sognamål: 'warrior') was a Norwegian extreme metal band. It was often assigned to Viking Metal , but its lyrics do not deal with Norse mythology , but the history of Sogndal .

history

The project was founded in the winter of 1994 "after a few years in crappy bands without ambitions" by Terje "Valfar" Bakken as the only member; Valfar did not refuse to accept further members, but lived in Sogndal , where no one except him was interested in black metal . In the period from 1995 to 1997 three or four concerts were held in the area where he had recourse to members of Ulcus. From the second demo recording Det gamle riket , Valfar worked with the guest drummer Steingrimm from Ulcus.

The use of a poster used by the Norwegian fascist party Nasjonal Samling for the album Arntor led to inquiries as to whether the group would sympathize with National Socialism ; however, the members of Windir do not represent right-wing extremists .

As Windir's music became more complex, Valfar began to work with guest musicians, including Steinrimm and Strom von Ulcus; after taking on Arntor , Valfar decided to turn the solo project into a band and teamed up with members of Ulcus. In 2001, 1184 was the first Windir album recorded with a full band. The cast also gave Windir the opportunity to perform live.

The end of the band

Terje "Valfar" Bakken left his apartment on January 14, 2004 to go to a log cabin belonging to his family. However, adverse weather conditions made this project impossible and he tried to return to his apartment, but did not succeed. Valfar was found dead not far from his home on January 17, 2004, after being reported missing by his family. Terje Bakken died of hypothermia. After his death the band Windir was broken up.

The album Valfar, a Windir was released in his memory after Valfar's death. On the first CD, the compilation includes two previously unreleased recordings, various new recordings, as well as Windir titles recorded by various friendly bands ( Enslaved , Finntroll and Mindgrinder). The second CD is a compilation of various important songs by the band. In June 2005 a Windir DVD was released, which is called SognaMetal and contains Windir's entire farewell concert on September 3, 2004 (Valfar's 26th birthday). On this, Valfar's brother Vegard took over the vocals for some of the songs.

Ex-Windir members Hváll, Steingrim and Sture formed a new band with a friend (Ese) called Vreid ('Zorn'), which released their first album Kraft in autumn 2004 . Meanwhile there are other bands with Cor Scorpii and Mistur, which also consist of former Windir members.
