K3b is a burning program from KDE for creating CDs , DVDs and Blu-ray Discs . It has a graphical user interface, which should enable the user to carry out all CD and DVD burning tasks as intuitively as possible. K3b has been in development since 1998. Version 1.0 was released for KDE 3 in March 2007 and the first version 2.0 based on KDE 4 was released on June 27, 2010.

The name K3b is short for KBBB, which means “KDE Burn Baby, Burn! " stands.

functionality

Strictly speaking, K3b is a graphical user interface for a large number of programs that provide the basic functions for burning DVDs and CDs under GNU / Linux (or other Unix-like systems) on the command line . K3b serves as a front-end and simplifies handling considerably by bundling the functionalities of these programs, since the user no longer comes into direct contact with them. This means that the user does not have to know the individual programs and their options and can reach their goal using the graphical user interface and mouse.

The K3b user interface supports simple drag and drop both within the program and from other programs (for example from the Dolphin file manager ). K3b can also be used as a utility for other KDE programs , such as B. the media player Amarok . This is made possible by the use of D-Bus , which provides communication functions between programs.

Functions

The functions and capabilities of K3b depend on the installed programs (and libraries ) that K3b can access on the respective system. When all the required programs are fully installed, the result is a very large range of functions:

  • Burning CD-Rs and CD-RWs (also erase)
  • Burning mixed-mode CDs, data CDs, audio CDs, (S) video CDs and eMovix CDs
  • Burn a variety of memory dump types ( Cue / Bin, TOC)
  • Burning DVD ± Rs and DVD ± RWs (also erase)
  • Burning DVD ± R DL
  • Burn data DVDs, video DVDs and eMoviX DVDs
  • Burn ISO 9660 CD and DVD images
  • Burn Blu-ray
  • Copy CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray
  • Reading of audio CDs in one or more files and generate corresponding Cuesheets or Playlists
  • Convert audio files to MP3 , Ogg Vorbis , etc.
  • Format and content analysis of inserted blanks and pre-recorded CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray

EMovix data carriers are CDs or DVDs which, in addition to the actual film, also contain a small GNU / Linux-based operating system. This allows a computer to be booted directly from CD or DVD and does not require any installed software to play the CD or DVD.

The selection of audio formats from which the CD can be burned also depends on the software installed. On a complete, free system, they include Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, and WAVE (.wav). Optionally MP3, Musepack and Monkey's Audio are supported.

From version 2.0 of K3b, which appeared in June 2010, writing to Blu-ray discs is supported.
