KDE Dolphin

Dolphin is the file manager of KDE Software Compilation 4 and part of KDE Applications 5 .

history

After the file manager KFM (KDE File Manager) of KDE 1 , its function was adopted in Konqueror from KDE 2 onwards . After the Konqueror was criticized as of KDE 3 as too complex for simple file management, the Dolphin project was launched. In contrast to Konqueror, it is now a pure file manager and can therefore be adapted to the special requirements.

The KDE 3 version of Dolphin is suitable for everyday use, although it has never left the beta stage . After version 0.8 was the last KDE 3 version, Dolphin was ported to KDE Platform 4 . In a spin-off called D3lphin , the development of a KDE 3 version was initially continued, but then discontinued.

Since the appearance of KDE 4.0, Dolphin has been the standard file manager, making a large part of the source code available as KPart. This allows the Konqueror browser to easily integrate the Dolphin view if directories are to be displayed in it.

Starting with KDE Applications 15.08, Dolphin is available based on KDE Frameworks 5 .

features

For many functions, Dolphin uses KDE program components , the KParts , as the front end . Archive contents or remote file directories can also be processed via so-called kioslaves of the KDE input / output . Dolphin allows you to split the directory view in order to display two directories side by side and to open several directories in tabs in one window . Multiple renaming of files / directories can still be carried out and an undo function is available. Dolphin supports breadcrumb navigation as well as direct entry of a path.
