Secrets of the Moon (often just SotM) is a German black metal band from Osnabrück , which was founded in 1995 by Daevas, Schizo and Frazer. The former was already active in the band Martyrium, which released two demo recordings and in 1994 their only album LVX occulta . Only one of the founders of the band is still active there.
history
Secrets of the Moon began their musical creative phase with the two demos Unearthed Arcana in 1995 and Vanitas in 1997, as well as an unnamed promo cassette in 1998. 1999 was followed by a Split-7 ”with the German formation Lunar Aurora . In 1998 work began on the debut work Stronghold of the Inviolables , which was released in 2001 as a record and in 2002 as a CD . This was followed by a re-release of the tape from 1998 under the name De musica mundana with some bonus tracks and splits.
In 2004 she followed her second album Carved in Stigmata Wounds, which was praised by fans and press . It is considered a complex development of the band's already independent style and served as a springboard for the last two releases: The Exhibitions EP and Antithesis .
In September 2009 Privilegivm appeared after several members had previously left the band and LSK ( Antaeus ) joined as the new bassist. It turned out more sluggish and darker than the previous ones. The band is currently under contract with Lupus Lounge , a subsidiary of Prophecy Productions .
On February 24, 2012, the band released a music video for the song Nyx from the album Seven Bells , which was announced for March 16, 2012 . The album was written with sG, T. Thelemnar and Ar. In September 2012, bassist Naamah Ash completed the line-up after performing as a session musician with the band since the Summer Breeze Festival 2011.
In 2013 the former bassist LSK died.
Music style and ideology
While the debut is still very raw and the vocals in particular are underlaid with strong effects, the later albums are kept in a more unusual, rockier style for Black Metal. In Privilegivm , the band also concentrated on slow, doom- heavy passages. Black House from 2020 broke away completely from the band's previous metal style and was received as dark rock .
When asked for a summary of their music, the band stated “darkness and death” and musical experimentation. Thelemnar names "nature, darkness, Satan " as the main influences and recommends reading Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim and Aleister Crowley , whose Gnostic Mass introduces the album Carved in Stigmata Wounds . S. Golden also makes reference to Crowley, occultism and Satanism .
