style
The final riff of Symbols of Bloodswords from the Wolf's Lair Abyss EP was also used as the first riff on Grand Declaration of War , which ties both releases together; the EP forms the first part of the concept, while the second part deals with the declaration of war and the war itself, and the third part deals with the subsequent period. The war is directed against religion and the church. Necrobutcher calls the album a "wake up call to all the people who will die when the supermarket closes".
On Grand Declaration of War the band breaks with Black Metal and experiments with electronic elements from techno and drum and bass, among others . In A Bloodsword and a Colder Sun no instruments were used, only programmed beats. In Completion in Science of Agony (Part I of II) , in which Øyvind Hægeland from Spiral Architect sings, a quiet industrial composition can be heard after about 6:20 minutes , which goes back to Tore Ylwizaker from Ulver ; Around 8:30 am, the metal elements come back in after the singing. Maniac doesn't just use guttural vocals , but talks about large parts of the album, sometimes with vocoder effects.
Reviews
The album was recorded mixed. One reviewer who took some getting used to the album said Maniac sounded like he was "puking". According to several critics, the music is partly very well written and fits the "war sound" that the band wants to achieve, but Maniac's vocals ruin the album; he can't growl , his screams are "shit" and he doesn't even try to use them. It's also annoying that the album is mostly spoken word .
