Live in Leipzig is a live album by the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem . It is the only official album-length release that features her late singer Dead (Per Yngve Ohlin).

History of origin

The album was recorded on November 26, 1990 at Club Eiskeller in Leipzig . The opening acts that evening were Eminence and Manos . Mayhem gave two concerts the two days before, one in Annaberg-Buchholz and one in Zeitz . The concerts were organized by Abo Alsleben, who had been in long-term correspondence with Øystein Aarseth beforehand . Alsleben published a book in 2020 with his memories of the tour through the former GDR.

The concert included some show effects. That evening Mayhem used real pig's heads that she had gotten from a local butcher. Since they had already used the pig's heads at the two previous concerts, they were already badly rotten . Furthermore, Per Yngve Ohlin cut himself with a knife during the gig and the band threw various pieces of meat into the audience.

It was to be the last recording with the singer, as he committed suicide on April 8, 1991 .

Versions

Before the official release, Live in Leipzig existed in the Norwegian scene as a cassette version. The first releases appeared as LP on the Italian label Obscure Plasma Records. The vinyl version from Obscure Plasma Records also contains the two sampler contributions The Freezing Moon and Carnage , which appeared on Projections of a Stained Mind in 1991 .

After the assassination of Euronymous, the album was re-released on CD in 1994 by Avantgarde Music , the successor label of Obscure Plasma Records, as a tribute to Dead and Euronymous. The cover shows a photograph of Dead, inside there is a declaration of war by Aarseth, which he directed against the death metal scene of the time . In the pamphlet he blamed them for Dead's suicide and announced retribution. The same label released a Picture LP in 1997, which was distributed in Germany by Last Epitaph .
