Deathcrush is an EP by Mayhem , first released in 1987, that has achieved cult status in the black metal scene. The EP is considered to be one of the first releases of the genre.

History of origin

After the release of the demo Pure Fucking Armageddon , the first edition of which was limited to 100 pieces, and several small concerts, including in Germany, Mayhem parted ways with the then singer Eirik “Messiah” Nordheim in the summer of 1986. He was then replaced by Sven Erik "Maniac" Kristiansen , whom they knew from the one-man band Septic Cunts. After several rehearsals, the material for their second demo Deathcrush was created in 1987 . The band recorded the material in the Creative Studios in Kolbotn from February to March . An LP version was released on the band's own label Posercorpse Music and was limited to 1000 copies. This first publication is considered a sought-after rarity today. The cover showed the severed hands of a thief in Mauritania against a red background. The first publication appeared with a pink background due to a typographical error. On the back there is a dedication to Metalion vom Slayer - Fanzine and the "No Fun - No Core - No Mosh - No Trends" logo. In a circle with a line through it is the death metal producer legend Scott Burns , who at that time embodied everything for Mayhem that bothered her about the current situation in death metal. Deathcrush was also the last release with Manheim and initially also with Maniac, both of which left the band shortly afterwards.

The uncompromising style of this release made Mayhem well known in the underground . Due to the financial situation, however, six years should pass before the CD version and a vinyl edition should be released on Euronymous' label Deathlike Silence Productions .

"It's a big trend today to look totally normal with these goddamn jogging suits and sing about" important matters ", and call it Death Metal. These people can die, they have betrayed the scene. Death Metal is for brutal people who are capable of killing, it's not for idiotic children who want to have funny hobby after school. [...]. I'd like to see a scene where the music is something gruesome and evil that normal people fear, and where the people in the scene all look like Hellhammer or old Sarcofago, spikes and chains rule! "

“It's a big trend these days to look absolutely normal, with those damn jogging suits and singing about“ important things ”and then call it Death Metal. These people can die, they betrayed the scene. Death metal is music for brutal people who are capable of killing, not idiotic kids who want a fun after school hobby. [...] I want to see a scene in which the music is so cruel and evil that normal people are afraid of it, and in which the members of this scene all look like Hellhammer or the old Sarcófago . Rivets and chains are great! "

- Euronymous : in an interview with Slayer magazine No. 8, 1991.

On the cover there is the addition "the true" above the band logo, since several bands with the name "Mayhem" existed.
