Chimera is the third studio album by the Norwegian band Mayhem . It was released in 2004. The cover , a screenshot from the 1922 film Witches , was made by TurboNatas from their band Red Harvest .

Style and content

Chimera marks the return to a significantly faster way of playing than on the rather experimental previous album Grand Declaration of War

On the album, the band orientates itself on Black Metal in connection with influences from various other musical genres.

The style is described as "very technical". The drums are mainly played with blast beats. The singing sounds "painful and tortured", but this is due to Maniac's incorrect singing technique.

reception

The album was often criticized by fans and critics for its style change.

Stewart Mason from Allmusic writes that the band Mayhem is better known for its past than for its music, but at the same time that there is “more to the album than the critics believe”.

According to the Chronicles of Chaos website , Mayhem “ surpasses even the wildest expectations” with Chimera . A reviewer on Zenial.nl said that Chimera had “what it takes to become a classic”. psycho888999 from Sputnikmusic gives the album the rating “masterful” and considers it “one of their most coherent works since De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas ”.
