Morgul is a Norwegian dark metal band that was formed in Råde in 1990 .

history

Morgul was originally founded as Jack and Hex by Jack D. Ripper and drummer Hex . In 1991 the band was renamed Morgul (the term Morgul is borrowed from JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings ) and their two demo recordings Vargvinter and In Gowns Flowing Wide were released. The Austrian record label Napalm Records became aware of her and soon a record deal was signed.

Together they recorded their first two albums Lost in Shadows Gray and Parody of the Mass . The latter was recorded in the legendary Abyss Studios in Sweden . In 1999 Morgul signed a contract with the record label Century Media and began work on their third album, The Horror Grandeur . The album was recorded in the Soundsuite studios in southern France . The Sins of Thy Beloved violinist Pete Johansen was invited for some violin passages . Shortly before the album was released, Hex left the band for personal reasons and Jack D. Ripper continued the project alone.

In 2001, Morgul recorded their fourth studio album, Sketch of Supposed Murderer , the last album under Century Media. In early 2002, Morgul signed a contract with the French label Season of Mist . In April of the same year Jack D. Ripper entered the studio again to record the vocals for the first album The Seventh Sun by the Swiss band Meridian.

In 2004 Morgul recorded the fifth album All Dead Here ... in the Sound Suite Studios. Again Pete Johansen played the violin and the following year the album was released under Season of Mist. Jack D. Ripper then moved to Detroit , USA , where he now lives with his wife and continues to be musically active. However, no album has been released since 2005.

style

While the band still offered raw, original Black Metal on the first releases , the band moved to slower, more bombastic and increasingly experimental sounds in later recordings. Today, the music is hardly oriented towards Black Metal, but rather towards experimental post-Black Metal bands such as Sigh , The Kovenant , Arcturus or Ulver . The later albums contain elements of Eastern European folklore and sound passages that tie in with the aesthetics of horror films in the 1930s to 1960s. The band also resorted to a violin . The texts deal with the “cycle of life and death. In addition, they pillory modern people, whose existence apparently has no other meaning than being workers and consumers in a consumer-oriented society. "
