Chasing Ghosts (2012) Let the Ocean Take Me This Could Be Heartbreak (2016)

Let the Ocean Take Me is the fourth studio album by the Australian post-hardcore band The Amity Affliction from Gympie , Queensland . The album was released on June 7, 2014 through Roadrunner Records worldwide and through UNFD in Australia .

Like its predecessor Chasing Ghosts , the album reached a top ten position in the local album charts . However, Let the Ocean Take Me is the first album to be placed in the international charts. So it made it into the US and New Zealand charts . With Pittsburgh and Don't Lean On Me , two singles in the group also made it into the singles charts in Australia for the first time.

In 2015 the album received platinum status in Australia for more than 70,000 records sold, making it the first album by the group to achieve this status.

The regular version of the album includes ten tracks with a total playing time of 41 minutes and 12 seconds. The Japanese version includes a live recording of the song Open Letter by Chasing Ghosts as a bonus . The album was reissued in 2015 with additional material. The new edition includes two new songs, Skeletons and Farewell, and a bonus DVD on which the documentary Seems Like Forever can be found.

background

In late 2013, the band released a demo version of the song Cave In , which led to speculation among the group's supporters as to whether this song would be featured on the album. This speculation ended with the release of the album's official tracklist on April 15, 2014. The album was recorded with producer Will Putney at Evergreen Studios in Brisbane , Queensland .

On April 14, 2014, the main single of the album, Pittsburgh, was presented along with the music video. With Don't Lean On Me , the second single was released on May 16, 2014. The album was released worldwide on June 10, 2014. Five days before the official release of what is now the fourth studio album, Let the Ocean Take Me , fans of the band had the opportunity to listen to the work in advance. In the meantime, the band released a music video for the song Death's Hand .

On July 10, 2015, the album was reissued with bonus material. The reissue of the album includes two bonus songs and a DVD entitled Seems Like Forever . The band released a music video for one of these new songs, Skeletons , the day before the new album was released.

Reviews

Also Let the Ocean Take Me was like his two predecessors durchwachsene reviews from the German trade press: this is expressed Matthias Weckmann from the German Metal Hammer , who already Chasing Ghosts of the band negatively criticized his successor only slightly more optimistic. Weckmann writes that the album has "quick riff episodes and huge breakdowns ", whereby the main focus remains on the catchy melody structures, which he describes as kitschy and easily predictable. Weckmann sees a major minus point in the use of keyboards, which reminds the music more of manga intros than powerful rock music or metal . However, he describes Will Putney's production as a success. Florian Aberle from Stageload criticizes the clear vocals as "overproduced to the tips of their hair, which are underpinned by unborn melodies and thunderous drumming" and can be found again and again in the album. According to Aberle, only the songs Never Alone and the album-closing Give It All manage to differentiate themselves from the rest of the album. Sebastian Berning from the German music portal Powermetal.de describes the group as the musically sweetest group in the post-hardcore segment. He justifies this with the catchiness of the songs on Let the Ocean Take Me , which at times come along with auto-tune- pimped melodies like in Pittsburgh . The production of Putney is also praised by Berning, even if he takes away all rough edges from the album due to the overproduced sound.

The English-language press, however, criticized the album much more positively. Sarah O'Connor from the Australian Blunt Magazine agreed with the opinion of her German colleagues that the album could not form new fans but that previous fans would be completely satisfied, but she says that the group with Let the Ocean Take Me has been with her to date strongest album released. Kevin Stewart-Panko from the US Alternative Press believes that the group knows how to manage the balancing act between metalcore and many other musical styles. At times the sound is reminiscent of genre colleagues from We Came as Romans and Of Mice & Men . However, Stewart-Panko also describes Ahren Stringer's vocals, which are supported by Auto-Tune, as interchangeable. Loudwire's Chad Childers gave the album positive feedback. At Metacritic , Let the Ocean Take Me received a Metascore of 77 percent based on four reviews.
