Balance and Composure is an American indie rock / emo band from Doylestown , Pennsylvania .

history

Balance and Composure was founded in September 2007 in Doylestown , Pennsylvania after two local bands split up. The first permanent line-up consisted of singer and guitarist Jon Simmons, guitarist Andy Slaymaker, bassist Matt Warner, drummer Bailey Van Ellis and third guitarist Dan Kerrigan, who was in his first year at West Chester University when the band was founded. In November of the same year the group recorded a demo with three tracks, before the debut EP I Just Want to Be Pure followed in July of the following year . Shortly after the EP was released, there was a ten-day national tour with the befriended band I Am Alaska . In the meantime, Kerrigan has been replaced by Erik Petersen on guitar.

In 2009 - after the band was signed by No Sleep Records in April 2009 - and in 2010, two more EPs were released, including a split release with the emo band Tigers Jaw . This was followed by concert tours with bands such as The Dear Hunter , dredg , Touché Amoré , each of which led through the United States , as well as the release of the debut album Separation on No Sleep Records. Further tours followed with bands such as La Dispute , Make Do and Mend , Rival Schools and Polar Bear Club , with two tours being completed for the first time outside the USA, in Canada and Australia . Between March and May 2012 the band played another North American tour before their first tour of the UK with Pianos Become the Teeth took place in August . In December of that year a split EP with the Emoband Braid was announced for February 26, 2013 .

In May 2013, the follow-up album to Separation was announced for the fall of the same year; two months later, the group launched a mysterious countdown on the band's official website. This ended on July 22nd with the announcement of the second album entitled The Things We Think We're Missing for September 9th and 10th, 2012. The album, which has a feature by Anthony Green of Circa Survive , rose in the week of September 28, 2013 at number 51 in the US album charts and stayed there for a week. Two days after the album was released, the band embarked on a US concert tour with Title Fight . On the night of October 6th to 7th, 2013, the group was involved in a serious traffic accident in which their van and trailer were completely destroyed, so that the musicians had to cancel the last concerts of the tour in Canada. It was not until four years later that the musicians would reveal that they had only just escaped death. A tour as the opening act for Coheed and Cambria , which started almost two weeks after the accident, was not affected by the cancellation .

After a mini -tour through Canada in January 2014 , a US tour followed in April and May as the opening act for the Manchester Orchestra . A week later the musicians flew to Australia to play concerts with La Dispute . The band also appeared for the first time in New Zealand . A concert tour through mainland Europe followed in October and November, accompanied by Milk Teeth , Moose Blood and Seaheaven . Already in 2011 the band could be seen in Europe with Title Fight and Transit .

From March to May 2015, the group played a concert tour with Circa Survive and CHON through the United States, with the groups also appearing on the Coachella . In November and December of 2017, all three bands toured together again. In June 2016 it was announced that Balance and Composure had signed with Vagrant Records . The band's third album was released on the label in October 2016 under the title Light We Made . The accident in 2013 meant that the musicians approached the creation of the album differently. The album debuted at number 137 in the national album charts and stayed there for a week. In mid-December 2017, singer Jon Simmons announced in an interview that the band would play one last US tour. However, it remained unclear whether this also announced the end of the group.

music

The group is firmly rooted in indie rock , but influences from emo and alternative rock also play in their music . The music portal Pitchfork Media even wrote Balance and Composure an important role for the new wave of post-hardcore whose musical boundaries were described as "elastic". Musical influences include bands like Explosions in the Sky , Modest Mouse , Red House Painters , Built to Spill , Neutral Milk Hotel and American Football . But also groups like The Smiths and emo veterans like Jimmy Eat World , Mineral , Braid , Jawbreaker , Texas Is the Reason and even country singer Johnny Cash are counted among the influences of the musicians. According to the No Sleep Records label, there are musical similarities to Title Fight , Brand New and even Nirvana .

Alex Schlage from Ox-Fanzine, however, denied a comparison with groups like Thrice , Sunny Day Real Estate , Brand New and Nirva and wrote that the musicians have chosen their own path. The band works with three guitarists ; Jon Simmons' vocals alternate on the debut album Separation between guttural and clear vocals. The riffing is described as atmospheric, the melodies as catchy. The tempo of the music is mostly in the mid-tempo range, so that the group has already referred to it as " Title Fight in slower" or " Punk-Rock 2.0", whereby the music from Balance and Composure is a mixture of Hardcore Punk , Punk Rock, Grunge and '90s emo is described, using Mineral and Texas Is the Reason for emo influence as references. The band's second album, The Things We Think We're Missing , is described as a heavier version of the brand new album The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me .
