Built to Spill is an American indie rock - band from Boise , Idaho . Before the band was founded in 1992 by Doug Martsch, Brett Nelson and Ralf Youtz, Martsch was the singer and guitarist of the band Treepeople . Scott Plouf was the drummer on Beck's first album, One Foot in the Grave .

In 1993, Ultimate Alternative Wavers was the band's first studio album. Since then, the line-up of Built to Spill has changed several times. Only Doug Martsch, who is considered to be the head of the group, is a permanent member of the band. In October 2009, There Is No Enemy , the band's seventh album, was released.

The group's sound was significantly influenced by Dinosaur Jr. , Pavement and Neil Young . Doug Martsch founded the band Halo Benders in collaboration with singer and label founder Calvin Johnson .
