No Sleep Records is an American independent label founded by Chris Hansen in 2006 and based in Huntington Beach , California . It released albums by artists such as Balance and Composure , La Dispute and The Wonder Years . Various free sampler albums have been published on the Internet. The label associates itself with the vegan lifestyle and the renewed interest in vinyl record sales .

history

The label was founded in 2006 by Chris Hansen, who had previously worked in the mail order business at Smartpunk and Fearless Records and gained experience there.

The first release of No Sleep was the EP "Our American Cousin", in Hansen's opinion "a good indie / emo record in the style of the 1990s". During the first two years after founding the label, Hansen worked as art director at Trustkill and then moved to California to concentrate fully on developing the label.

The Wonder Years' second studio album "The Upsides" (2010) was a major release and hit the Billboard charts . Due to its great success, No Sleep set up its own sales area for Great Britain and Europe in 2010.

The label won the 2011 Libby Award by Peta2 as "Pet Friendliest record label"; most publications of the label contain a flyer about veganism .

In 2012, No Sleep began offering free music as a promotional tool. Starting with the offer of a subscription package with all current vinyl releases of the label, they started various initiatives such as “Free Album Tuesday” for some of their lesser known artists. The bands under contract with No Sleep that took part in the Warped Tour 2012 were released on a compilation album in 2012 that included B-sides and rarities.

For Record Store Day 2012 , No Sleep opened a flagship store from their California office, which they opened once a week. The shop stocks works by other record labels such as 6131, Animal Style, Topshelf, Run for Cover , Deathwish Inc. , Bridge 9 , Youth Conspiracy and Paper + Plastick, as well as bands from American hardcore punk and punk rock . Due to the slow sales, the shop was closed again.

For the first press of an artist's debut album, No Sleep usually releases 1,000 to 1,500 copies, either on compact disc or vinyl. Some 100 copies of some publications are also stored in order to sell them after a few years after they have increased in value.

Vinyl has become an important part of No Sleep's business model. Most releases are available on both disc and vinyl.
