The Tea Party is a Canadian rock band with blues , prog rock , Indian and Middle Eastern influences. The style has often been referred to as the "Moroccan roll" by the public and the media , and the music has been described as a mixture of The Doors and Led Zeppelin. The Tea Party have released eight albums on EMI Music Canada and sold approximately 1.6 million albums. "Heaven Coming Down" was even number one in the Canadian singles charts in 1999 . In 2005 the joint career of The Tea Party ended temporarily before the band reunited in summer 2011.

history

The early years (1990-1995)

The Tea Party was founded in 1990 by Jeff Martin, Stuart Chatwood and Jeff Burrows after a jam session at the Cherry Beach Rehearsal Studios in Toronto . All the members of the band had played together in various other bands once in their youth. They named their new band The Tea Party after the disreputable “ hash sessions ” of the famous Beat Generation poets Allen Ginsberg , Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs .

The Tea Party released their first album of the same name in 1991, and marketed it on their own label "Eternal Discs". The album had strong influences from psychedelic rock and blues, and was produced by Jeff Martin himself. He kept this on the future albums in order to guarantee the band complete artistic freedom. In 1993 The Tea Party signed a record deal with EMI Music Canada and released their first major label album "Splendor Solis". The band used open tunings and goblet drums as a style element to mimic Indian sounds, which was perfected throughout their career, but without losing sight of the blues influence. In 1994 the album was released in Australia. The single "Save Me" was the starting signal for a successful career Down Under . The band gained the support of the national radio station Triple J , which made the first tour of The Tea Party possible, where "Save Me" was the unconquerable hit of every gig.

Successes (1995-2000)

With ever-improving sound, "The Edges of Twilight" was recorded in 1995 with a range of Indian and Arabic instruments. "Sister Awake", the third single on the album, pretty much defines what the band was up to with the combination of rock and world music. "Sister Awake" is an acoustic based arrangement of 12-string guitar, sitar , sarod , harmonium and goblet drums. The Edges of Twilight is The Tea Party's most commercially successful album, with more than 270,000 records sold. It was awarded double platinum in Canada and platinum in Australia.

After successful tours in Canada, Europe and Australia in 1996, The Tea Party recorded "Alhambra".

"Transmission" was released in 1997 and was the band's first foray into electronic music . With a Sond that was not dissimilar to the Nine Inch Nails , The Tea Party dared to move the basis of their music to world music . "Transmission" is a collection of aggressive songs caused by upheavals in the band. The change in management and unsatisfactory support from the record company caused disagreements at the time. This was also reflected in the first single "Temptation" and the title track of the album. Nevertheless, the band members managed to overcome this crisis and emerge stronger from it. These experiences were then processed, among other things, in the following albums.

"Triptych" followed in 1999, and the first single "Heaven Coming Down" became number one on Canadian radio. The Tea Party music became more orchestral based on the blues orientation. "Live at the Enmore Theater", the band's only live album, was released for the album "Triptych" while touring Australia.

The later years (2000-2005)

In 2000 the band released a collection of singles called "The Tea Party Collection", followed the following year by a DVD full of music videos (which Martin re-mixed in Raumklang ) called "Illuminations".

Later in 2001 "The Interzone Mantras" was released and in November 2002 there was another tour of Canada with the symphony orchestra.

"Seven Circles," the band's last album, was released in 2004. Both "The Interzone Mantras" and "Seven Circles" were a return to the band's original sound.

In October 2005, The Tea Party unexpectedly broke up when Jeff Martin suddenly announced that he would pursue his solo career in the future. In retrospect, different views on the creative implementation were given as the reason for the separation.

Chatwood wrote in the band's forum that he and Jeff Burrows were very sorry and were both deeply affected. From their side, the band would now take an extended break.

Intermittent tape breakup (2006-2011)

In 2006, Burrows and Chatwood continued to write songs under the name The Art Decay. Chatwood also composed the music for the video game Prince of Persia for Ubisoft Montreal . Burrows teamed up as a drummer with Rush's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, as well as other Canadian musicians, to form the Big Dirty Band. He also moderates the lunchtime program on FM-The Rock, a radio station in Windsor.

Martin moved to Ireland and recorded his debut solo album "Exile and the Kingdom" there, which was released in 2006 in Canada and Australia. He has already toured parts of Europe, Canada and Australia and released two live albums: "Live in Brisbane 2006" and 2006 "Live in Dublin ". In 2008 he founded THE ARMADA together with Wayne Sheehy (Ron Wood, Eric Burdon and others) and released the self-titled debut album in the same year. Martin moved from Ireland to Australia a short time later, which also marked the end of The Armada. In the summer of 2010 he began with Jay Cortez and Malcolm Clark under the band name Jeff Martin 777 with the recordings of The Ground Cries Out . The album was released in Canada on March 1, 2011 and was distributed by EMI Canada. A month later, the album was released in Australia. Although Jeff Martin 777 sees itself not as a solo project, but as an independent band, rumors of a reunion of The Tea Party increased. In April 2011, drummer Jeff Burrows confirmed these rumors.

The Reunion (2011-2012)

In the summer of 2011 The Tea Party will play some concerts and festivals in Canada for the first time in a six-year break. A second Canadian tour followed in November – December 2011. For May 2012 the band is planning a tour in Australia.

On September 19th, 2014 a new studio album called "The Ocean At The End" was released.
