Recordings
The recordings for this Paul McCartney composition took place on February 9, 1967 in London's Regent Sound Studios and on February 21, 1967 in Abbey Road Studios . The Beatles were forced to work in a different studio on February 9, for the first time since signing their contract with Parlophone , as Abbey Road Studios were completely booked for that day. George Martin played a harpsichord on recording . The distorted and shrill sound of the guitar solo played by George Harrison was achieved by an overdriven amplifier. With only two days of recording, this production was one of the shortest on the album.
An anecdote has it that the song relates to McCartney's repairs on his farm in Scotland . It was also alleged that Fixing a Hole was selling heroin . Paul McCartney said this was a song against the demeanor of self-righteous philistines who mocked idleness.
In a 1968 interview, McCartney said the song was about the hole in the street where the rain can get in, a good old analogy - the hole in your makeup that lets the rain in and keeps the ghost from going, wherever he wants . He went on to say that the following lines referred to the fans who hung out in front of his house day and night and whose actions he found repulsive:
"See the people standing there
who disagree, and never win
And wonder why they don't get in my door"
