Give My Regards to Broad Street ( English Greetings Broad Street from me ) is the sixth solo album by Paul McCartney . At the same time, including the Wings albums , it is Paul McCartney's 16th album after the Beatles split up . It was released on October 22, 1984 as the soundtrack to the musical film Broad Street .

Emergence

McCartney was in the middle of work on his new album Pipes of Peace in 1982 , which was to contain some material that had already been recorded in 1980/1981. He interrupted work on the album in early November 1982 to devote himself to his long-cherished film project Broad Street . He wrote the screenplay for the film, which after a few rejections - from Richard Lester and David Puttnam , among others - was finally enthusiastically accepted by director Peter Webb . The film deals with a day in the life of Paul McCartney. In the 14 hours shown, he tries to find master tapes from his new album that have apparently disappeared. During the day he does record recordings, band rehearsals and an interview and live appearance on the BBC .

The soundtrack for the film was made between November 1982 and July 1984. The filming of the film was finished by the end of July 1983. A release of the album and film was postponed to 1984, as McCartney's solo album Pipes of Peace was first released in October 1983 . Musically, the album essentially offered new recordings of songs that had already been released, such as from the Beatles' time: Good Day Sunshine , Yesterday , Here, There and Everywhere , Eleanor Rigby , For No One and The Long and Winding Road as well as from the solo time of Paul McCartney: Wanderlust , Ballroom Dancing , Silly Love Songs and So Bad . New songs that have not yet been released are: No More Lonely Nights , Not Such a Bad Boy and No Values as well as film music: Corridor Music and Eleanor's Dream . Goodnight Princess is an instrumental piece that was not used for the film.

The single No More Lonely Nights was released on September 24, 1984 as a pre-coupling to the soundtrack . The soundtrack was released on October 22, 1984 at the same time as the premiere of the film Broad Street .

Give My Regards to Broad Street became the sixth number one album for Paul McCartney in the UK and the first album to drop out of the top 20 in the US.

McCartney had already worked with George Martin in October / November 1980 at AIR Studios in London on the single We All Stand Together for the short animated film Rupert and the Frog Song ; the single was only released on November 12, 1984 in Great Britain and is not included on the album. The film was released as a supporting film for Broad Street .

In September to October 1984 Paul McCartney produced the songs I Love this House (released in April 1997 on the B-side of the single Young Boy ), Lindiana (previously only released on bootlegs) and We Got Married (the completion of the The song took place during the recording of Flowers in the Dirt ).

Cover design

criticism

While the feature film Broad Street received devastating reviews, the soundtrack was recorded mixed. allmusic criticized the fact that numerous tracks were re-recorded, but not reinterpreted, but praised the single No More Lonely Nights as a “beautiful mid-tempo number”. The Rolling Stone found that the soundtrack was not McCartney's most embarrassing solo album, but the compilation with numerous 1: 1 remakes of his own songs was embarrassing. In Rolling Stone, critic Kurt Loder was stunned by McCartney's attitude: "McCartney's disdain for his own skills leads to one of the saddest declines in contemporary pop."

Awards

Paul McCartney received a BAFTA nomination in the category Best Original Song and a Golden Globe nomination in the category Best Movie Song for No More Lonely Nights in 1985 .
