History of origin

In October 1975, EMI released a compilation album by John Lennon; The following month followed a compilation album by Ringo Starr ( Blast from Your Past ) and again a year later (November 1976) The Best of George Harrison followed . The three ex-Beatles did not renew their contract with EMI and released their next studio album on a different label. The compilation includes all US singles released to date, excluding Stand by Me . The following tracks were edited (shortened) especially for the album: Give Peace a Chance (shortened to 58 seconds), Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) , Mother , Power to the People , Woman Is the Nigger of the World and Whatever Gets You thru the Night . In Happy Xmas (War Is Over) and Give Peace a Chance (Reprise) is a medley. It consists of the abridged studio version of Happy Xmas (War Is Over) which merges into the live version of Give Peace a Chance , which was recorded on August 30, 1972.

The album was released on the Amiga label in the GDR in 1983 ; instead of the shortened version of the song Give Peace a Chance , it contains the full single version of 4 minutes and 50 seconds. A text by Ingolf Haedicke was printed on the back cover. After Double Fantasy, it was the second and last album by John Lennon to be released in the GDR .
