The Kamenz – Pirna railway is a main line in Saxony . In Kamenz it is connected to the Lübbenau – Kamenz railway line and leads via Pulsnitz and Arnsdorf to Pirna . The Arnsdorf – Dürrröhrsdorf section has been closed since 2007.

history

Prehistory and construction

Kamenz-Radeberg / Arnsdorf

As early as 1846, the Dresden – Görlitz railway of the Saxon-Silesian Railway Company existed in Upper Lusatia , which connected the largest Upper Lusatian cities of Görlitz , Bautzen and Löbau . Kamenz, once one of the most powerful cities in the region as a member of the Upper Lusatian Six Cities Association, was far off this line. In 1862 a stock corporation was founded to build a railway line to Kamenz on a private basis. Ultimately, the project could not be implemented due to a lack of financial resources.

In 1867 Kamenz citizens submitted a new petition to the Saxon state parliament to build a railway from Radeberg to Kamenz at state expense. Meanwhile, across the state border in Prussia, the construction of a connection from Lübbenau in the direction of Senftenberg had begun, so that a continuation via Kamenz in the direction of Dresden seemed profitable. In May 1868 it was decided to build the Radeberg – Kamenz line at state expense. In August 1868 the Prussian government also promised to continue across the border.

The first preparatory work for the construction of the line began in July 1868. The actual construction work began on March 3, 1869 at the junction from the Dresden – Görlitz line at km 81.835. In addition to the construction of some larger viaducts, a short tunnel also had to be built in the urban area of Kamenz. Because of the expected through traffic, the route was planned for two tracks, even if only one track was built for the time being.

On September 30, 1871, the route was finally opened with a pageant. A little later, the Prussian connection route was also completed. The continuous train service in the direction of Lübbenau began on May 1, 1874.

It was planned to extend it to the south during the construction of the route between Radeberg and Kamenz. Such a route was to be built mainly because of the transport of Bohemian lignite to Upper Lusatia; any importance in passenger train traffic only played a subordinate role in these considerations. It soon turned out to be a mistake that the Kamenz line from the direction of Radeberg was integrated into the Saxon-Silesian Railway.

At the beginning of 1872 the project to build a line between Arnsdorf and Pirna was worked out. At Arnsdorf, a new station was planned on the Görlitz line, into which the line from the direction of Kamenz should also flow.

On March 13, 1872, the Saxon state parliament approved a total of 4 million thalers for the construction of the Arnsdorf – Pirna line . Construction work began in the summer of 1872.

In addition to the construction of the Elbe bridge in Pirna and the viaduct over the Wesenitz near Dittersbach, the relocation of the Pirna train station in particular also caused enormous costs. On the slope section from Dürrröhrsdorf to Pirna, in addition to the construction of several deep cuts, larger embankments were also required. The construction of tunnels, however, could be avoided by the route above the deep Wesenitztal. The line between Dürrröhrsdorf and Pirna was double-tracked, and the second track level was prepared for the rest of the line. The line was completed in October 1875 and opened on October 15, 1875.

business

In terms of freight transport, the route met expectations. In 1901 the section between Arnsdorf and Dürrröhrsdorf also received a second track. However, passenger trains never ran continuously over the entire route. In the timetables, the connection was always divided into the sections Kamenz – Arnsdorf and Arnsdorf – Pirna. On January 1, 1911, the little-used link between Kleinröhrsdorf and Radeberg ( Arnsdorf curve ) was abandoned, but the track was not expanded until 1948.

After the First World War, coal imports from Bohemia decreased to a minimum, which led to a sharp decline in freight traffic. The Deutsche Reichsbahn therefore downgraded the Arnsdorf – Dürrröhrsdorf section to a branch line on April 1, 1924 .

During the Second World War, the Pirna railway station was hit by a heavy bomb attack by the US Air Force on April 19, 1945, so that all train traffic there came to a standstill until the end of the war. The Elbe Bridge in Pirna was also badly damaged and was only accessible again from September 9, 1945 after a steel superstructure had been installed. Between 1945 and 1948 the second track was dismantled as a reparation payment for the Soviet Union .

On October 1, 1949, the Dürrröhrsdorf – Pirna section also lost its status as a main line .

After the political change in 1989

After the political change in eastern Germany in 1989, there was a drastic decline in travel services and goods traffic. Nevertheless, the entire route was completely renovated in the following years, which also included the renewal of the Elbe bridge.

On May 23, 1998, travel between Arnsdorf and Dürrröhrsdorf was canceled by the Upper Elbe transport association, and freight traffic was discontinued at the end of the same year. This section was last used in regional traffic in August 2002 during the flood disaster to keep Pirna accessible, as the main Dresden – Bad Schandau line had to be closed. From now on, this section was only used for occasional diversion traffic. In this context, the Eurocity trains on the Berlin – Prague route also ran on this route during construction work at the Dresden hub . Despite this importance, the section was finally closed on February 1, 2007.

In April 2009, construction work began to rebuild the Arnsdorf curve , which again enables direct train journeys from Dresden to Kamenz. For this purpose, trees were felled on the old subgrade in spring 2007. The connection curve designed for 110 km / h was commissioned in October 2009. Five million euros were estimated for its construction. After commissioning, the travel time of the regional trains on the Dresden – Kamenz route could be reduced by up to 14 minutes, as the stop in Arnsdorf with a change of direction and waiting for the return train is no longer necessary. To compensate for the discontinued train connection, the regional express trains on the Dresden – Görlitz and Dresden – Zittau lines have also stopped in Arnsdorf since the timetable change in December 2008.

As of December 12, 2010, the Sachsen urban railway provided all public transport services on the Dresden - Kamenz and Pirna - Neustadt (- Bad Schandau) routes. After an emergency bus service in the meantime, the transport services are currently being provided by the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn in after an emergency award , after the city railroad of Saxony ceased rail operations on July 25, 2019 without prior notice. From Dresden to Kamenz there is an hourly cycle from Monday to Saturday, in the opposite direction, however, only a 54–66 minute cycle; on Sundays there is a 2-hour cycle. The symmetry time is a few minutes earlier than usual.

For several years, DB Netz AG had comprehensively modernized the section between Kamenz and Arnsdorf until spring 2014. In addition to the track systems, six overpasses were modernized, seven culverts in the railway embankment were renewed and 14 level crossings were partially redesigned and adapted to the current state of safety technology. As a result, starting with the small timetable change on June 15, 2014, the line speed in this section was increased to 120 km / h and the travel time was reduced by two minutes. DB Netz AG invested around 6.5 million euros in this.

In October 2015, construction began on a new Pulsnitz Süd stop, which is located in the city of Pulsnitz south of the Dresdner Straße level crossing. A second access from August-Bebel-Straße is to be built later. The new stop, which can be reached step-free from Robert-Koch-Straße, was put into operation on December 11, 2015. Deutsche Bahn AG, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe jointly invested around 625,000 euros for the new stop. In September 2016 the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe drew a positive balance on the volume of travel in Pulsnitz. The total number of people entering and leaving the two stops in Pulsnitz is given as 640 travelers on working days. Overall, they are significantly higher than before the opening of the new stop.

An improved passenger train timetable has been in force since December 10, 2017, which provides for an hourly service between Dresden and Kamenz during the day, including on Sundays and public holidays . The travel time from Dresden Hbf to Kamenz is 47 minutes, in the opposite direction 46 minutes, which corresponds to an average travel speed of around 65 kilometers per hour. The train crossing - a little before the usual minute of symmetry - is on the double- track Görlitz – Dresden line near Radeberg.

In 2018, the trolley service began between Dürrröhrsdorf and a rental station on Bundesstraße 6 .

outlook

In connection with the planned redistribution of regionalization funds, the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) did not rule out the prospect of discontinuing passenger traffic between Pirna and Dürrröhrsdorf in January 2016. After an increase in the federal regionalization funds (compared to the original plan) for the Free State of Saxony until 2031, the VVO appeared to be able to finance local rail transport services on the Pirna – Dürrröhrsdorf (–Sebnitz) route until 2031. A formal prerequisite for this, however, is the corresponding anchoring of the higher allocations to the responsible authorities by the Free State of Saxony in the 2017/2018 double budget . This is expected for the end of 2016.

As part of the preliminary planning for the electrification of the Görlitz – Dresden railway line, which was started in mid-2015 , the Free State of Saxony is also having a look at whether the Kamenz – Radeberg / Arnsdorf section can also be electrified at the same time if the project is implemented. In addition, the electrification of the Kamenz - Arnsdorf section (continuous connection Cottbus - Hoyerswerda - Kamenz - Dresden) is included in the federal government's package of measures.
