The Neustadt – Dürrröhrsdorf line is a branch line in Saxony . It begins in Neustadt in Saxony and leads via Stolpen to Dürrröhrsdorf .

history

Prehistory and construction

As early as 1846, the Saxon-Silesian Railway ( Dresden - Görlitz ) was a railway line in Upper Lusatia that connected the largest Upper Lusatian cities. Soon the densely populated area south of this line also required a rail link. As early as February 14, 1870, the Saxon state parliament approved a route from Sohland via Neustadt to Pirna , in order to connect there to the projected route Pirna - Gottleuba - Dux (see Gottleubatalbahn ). The main purpose of the new route should be the cheap import of the coveted Bohemian brown coal.

However, it would be a few more years before the project was legally finalized on May 23, 1874. In October of the same year, work began on the line that was to connect to the Bautzen – Schandau line under construction in Neustadt and to join the existing Kamenz – Pirna line in Dürrröhrsdorf . At Helmsdorf, Stolpen and Neustadt the construction of smaller viaducts was necessary, which were made by Italian stonemasons.

On June 30, 1877, the line was finally opened with a ceremony. The scheduled train service began one day later, on July 1, 1877. On September 1, 1877, the Bautzen – Schandau line also went into operation, which enabled continuous traffic to Upper Lusatia.

Direct train traffic from the Dresden area in the direction of Zittau was only handled for a short time . With the commissioning of the Niederneukirch – Bischofswerda line, the Neustadt – Dürrröhrsdorf line lost a significant part of its traffic from 1879 onwards. As early as October 15, 1878, the graduation to the " secondary railway " had taken place.

Before the end of the Second World War - on May 8, 1945 - all the viaducts along the route were blown up. Train traffic was no longer possible until wooden temporary bridges were installed.

The stretch of open terrain was hit several times by snow drifts, in which trains got stuck. A train that got stuck near Helmsdorf on January 10, 1970 could only be recovered after three days. For this reason, a snow blower was kept in Pirna until the beginning of the 1990s so that the route could be cleared quickly if necessary.

After the political change in eastern Germany in 1989, the route quickly lost its importance in travel and freight traffic. From the mid-1990s onwards, a two-axle railcar was usually enough to transport the few travelers. In terms of freight traffic, the route was one of the last in East Saxony on which a regular local freight train still ran. Several connections in Neustadt, such as the agricultural machinery factory ( progress ; later Case ) and a brickworks ensured a brisk freight volume. The connection to the Langenwolmsdorf agrochemical center was also served as required until the mid-1990s. It was only after 2001 that the route lost its freight traffic as a result of the MORA C rationalization program (“Market-Oriented Offer Cargo”).

On May 31, 1997, the remaining passenger train traffic was transferred to a rail replacement service because of the ailing track. Work on repairing the missing sections only began in March 1999 after the Upper Elbe Transport Association had issued a 15-year order guarantee. On July 15, 1999 the passenger train service was resumed.

Today, the route is operated every hour on weekdays by the regional trains on the Pirna - Dürrröhrsdorf - Neustadt - Sebnitz - Bad Schandau route. Freight traffic no longer takes place. Between 2010 and 2019, the urban railway of Saxony provided all public transport services. On July 25, 2019, the company ceased operating rail operations. On October 2, 2019, the company was dissolved due to bankruptcy. The rail replacement service organized as a result is scheduled to end on February 10, 2020. Then the Central German Regiobahn will resume rail operations.

outlook

In connection with the planned redistribution of regionalization funds, the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) did not rule out the prospect of suspending passenger traffic between Pirna, Dürrröhrsdorf and Neustadt in January 2016. After the federal regionalization funds were increased (compared to the original plan) for the Free State of Saxony until 2031, the VVO appeared to be able to finance the regional rail transport services on the route (Pirna–) Dürrröhrsdorf – Neustadt (–Sebnitz) until 2031. A formal prerequisite for this, however, is the corresponding anchoring of the higher allocations to the responsible authorities by the Free State of Saxony in the 2017/2018 double budget . This is expected for the end of 2016.

Neustadt (Sachs) station is the connecting station to the Bautzen – Bad Schandau railway line . Until recently, Neustadt (Sachs) was the most important freight tariff point on the entire route. In particular, VEB Progress Agricultural Machinery (most recently: Case Harvesting Systems) ensured a brisk freight volume there. In November 1990, block trains with agricultural machinery were still being dispatched for customers in the Soviet Union. The last goods customers in Neustadt were a fuel dealer and a scrap dealer, whose service was discontinued in 2002 as a result of the MORA C rationalization program .

Since a station renovation in September 2006 there are only two platform tracks and a few side tracks. Since then, the remaining points and signals have been operated exclusively via the interlocking on the west side, which received new interlocking technology with HI light signals.

Langenwolmsdorf

Today's Langenwolmsdorf stop has existed since the line opened. The originally existing freight transport facilities were dismantled in 1967. The siding of the Agrochemical Center (ACZ) Langenwolmsdorf was located in the station area and was served as required until 2002.

The Dürrröhrsdorf station was built in 1875 with the construction of the Kamenz – Pirna line. In the meantime an important railway junction, it now only serves the train crossings in tourist traffic on the Pirna – Neustadt route. Freight transport facilities no longer exist.
