history
Helmsdorf can be traced back to the name of a locator Helwig. It was first mentioned in 1247 as Helewigesdorf . The Hussites camped here at the mouth of the Katharinenwassers in the Wesenitz when they invaded Saxony. In 1559 there was an official village and a Vorwerk . Both became cursory. Two villages developed: Oberhelmsdorf and Niederhelmsdorf. The St. Katharinen Church, mentioned for the first time in 1473, is in Oberhelmsdorf. It was changed in the classicist style in 1846. The organ was created by Wilhelm Leberecht Herbrig in 1848. After a fire in 1969, the instrument was given to the church in Langenhennersdorf in 1971 before the church was rebuilt, which had been reduced in size.
It was not until 1937 that Ober- and Niederhelmsdorf merged to form the municipality of Helmsdorf. With the municipal reform in 1994, Helmsdorf was incorporated into Stolpen.
In 1937, a training and further education facility for the bakery trade with an attached rest home was founded in Helmsdorf ; the Helmsdorf Castle with its historic rooms proved to be ideal as a seat in this place. During the Second World War and later in the GDR era , the Saxon bakery school in Helmsdorf was the best-known training facility for master bakers in eastern Germany. After reunification, it passed into the sponsorship of the state guild association of the bakery trade of Saxony in 1990. At the end of the 1990s, the training and classrooms in the castle became too small, the educational facility was relocated to Dresden and the castle property was sold to private customers.
