history

Helmsdorf Castle near Stolpen , the former seat of the bakery school

The establishment of the Sächsische Bäckerfachschule Dresden-Helmsdorf e. V. in 1937 by the state guild association of the bakery trade Saxony took place in politically and economically difficult times. Due to the increasing competition from industrial bakeries, the bakery trade was forced to improve the training and further education of the employees in the artisanal bakeries. The Saxon bakers also recognized this and created a master school including a rest home in Helmsdorf in Saxon Switzerland. The old castle with its historic rooms was made for this facility.

During the Second World War and later in the GDR era , the Saxon bakery school in Helmsdorf was the best-known training facility for master bakers in eastern Germany. After reunification, in 1990 the re-established state guild association Saxonia of the bakery trade in Saxony took over responsibility for the traditional bakery school. At the end of the 1990s, however, the training and classrooms became too small and alternatives were looked for. The listed castle building could only be adapted to the new educational and technological requirements to a limited extent, so those responsible decided to build a new building in Dresden. The new school building in Albertstadt in Dresden was inaugurated on October 6, 1999, and an annex was added in 2006. The total investment was 6.7 million DM. Since 2008, the bakery school has been one of the leading training facilities of the German Bakery Academy (ADB).
