The Emotions is an American vocal trio that was placed on the Billboard R&B charts between 1969 and 1985 with a total of 29 singles and nine albums and is one of the leading female R&B acts of the 1970s. The most successful were the album Rejoice and the accompanying release Best of My Love , which reached number 1 on the R&B charts in 1977 and were awarded platinum . A worldwide success was Boogie Wonderland , a feature with Earth, Wind & Fire , the 1979 United Kingdom and the United States gold status achieved.
Band history
The group originally consisted of three sisters, Jeanette, Sheila and Wanda Hutchinson, who sang gospel as children and achieved worldly fame through regional appearances before they released the single I Can't Stand No More Heart Aches in 1967 on the Chicago soul label Brainstorm Records . The trio then moved to the Memphis- based label Volt, a subsidiary of Stax Records , and worked with producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter. When So I Can Love You hit number three on the R&B charts in 1969, the singers were still teenagers . The album Untouched went largely unnoticed in 1972, but the release Show Me How and the not on the album My Honey and Me , a cover version of the song by Luther Ingram , reached top 20 positions in the R&B charts.
After a label change to Columbia Records and the engagement of producer Maurice White from Earth, Wind and Fire, the album Flowers was released in 1976 , which reached number five on the R&B and number 45 of the pop charts and received a gold record. The title track and the second release, I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love , climbed into the R&B Top 20, the latter also reaching number four on the Billboard Dance Charts. In 1977 the album Rejoice followed , which brought the final breakthrough. The record came in at number one on the R&B and number seven on the pop charts and was awarded a platinum record. The release Best of My Love , a number one hit on the R&B and pop charts , received platinum and a Grammy for best R&B vocal group. Don't Ask My Neighbors made it into the R&B top 10 a little later. In the same year, Stax Records released the album Sunshine , recorded between 1972 and 1974 , which was a minor success.
With Sunbeam , another gold award-winning album entered the charts in 1978, and the most successful release, Smile, climbed to number six on the R&B charts. In 1979 they worked with Earth, Wind and Fire, the band of the emotion producer White. The joint song Boogie Wonderland became an international hit and was placed in the top 10 of the UK charts and the US R&B and pop charts, but also in the top 30 in Germany . The emotion albums Come into Our World (1979) and New Affair (1981) could not build on the success of their predecessors and only reached medium chart ranks. The group then separated from Maurice White. With the albums Sincerely (1984) and If I Only Knew (1985) released by Motown , the success continued to decline.
Sheila Hutchinson sang Feels Good to Feel Good in 1987 , a feature with Chicago soul singer Garry Glenn. The younger sister Pam, who had temporarily joined the formation in the 1970s and can be heard alongside Wanda and Sheila on the album Rejoice , became a permanent member at the turn of the millennium. Together with her sister Jeanette, she sang in the background of the gospel song There's No Greater Love by Los Angeles- born singer Helen Baylor in 1990 . Wanda and Jeanette Hutchinson sang on Earth, Wind and Fire's Heritage album that same year .
